What can I wear with this dress to keep me warm?!

I bought this dress in the french connection sale

It's actually really nice on and was a bit of a bargain. I've got a couple of things I'd like to wear it for around Christmas but I REALLY feel the cold 🥶 so would like something I can wear over it. I suppose I'm thinking a cardigan?! But a bit dressier. Which just sounds awful really 😁Any suggestions?

A silk shawl?

Hdpr · 22/09/2025 22:02

A normal cardigan or shawl will age it instantly. I think it probably needs a cropped fluffy jacket/cardi/sequin jacket thing in cream

verycloakanddaggers · 22/09/2025 22:03

Yes a cardigan - could be fine knit or something chunky, could be matching or contrasting, could be short or long!

WashableVelvet · 22/09/2025 22:05

Cropped non-fitted jumper over the top. Maybe in a coordinating blue shade?

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 22/09/2025 22:09

H&M had a nice burgundy fine knit but warm cardigan, slightly cropped.

WineOfYourFiveADay · 22/09/2025 22:11

I'd highly recommend a tonal oversized jumper as it creates such a lovely silhouette that is actually a lot more flattering than it sounds. COS to a really nice one at the moment: newin.style/products/chunky-cashmere-crew-neck-jumper1

This one from Yumi.co.uk looks nice & warm without giving dressing gown vibes.

Thanks all, I really like the idea of the oversized jumper for a day look. And yes maybe a cropped fine knit cardigan for an evening.

This bargain dress is suddenly becoming quite dear 😄

Thermals underneath 😃Definitely a slip/petticoat.

It’s giving me bed-jacket vibes…..

Onlycoffee · 22/09/2025 23:22

Agree with the oversized jumper or a slightly cropped boxy style.
My daughter feels the cold and wears al lot of layers, including thermals, cardigan and big long shawls /scarves with dresses like this or skirts, then with oversized blazer and boots, it's eclectic but it works.
Maybe her age, you can wear anything in your twenties and get away with it I suppose.

Twinstudy · 22/09/2025 23:45

I've just bought this from & other stories so will see how it looks (and if I can carry it off, I'm definitely not in my 20s 😄) https://www.stories.com/en-gb/product/knitted-sweater-dark-turquoise-1296829004/

Love that jumper @Twinstudy

Id treat it basically as a skirt, probably add some chunky boots and the jumper you have bought.

Im quite liking the western look at the moment too, so perhaps a suede style jacket?

Twinstudy · 23/09/2025 19:25

Love that jacket @Seaside3 , just ordered that too. This bargain dress is really becoming quite the expense 😁

I’d do:
oversized, slouchy soft jumper as if it were a skirt
or a sheer, fitted, long-sleeve turtleneck under it,
and thermal leggings with tall suede boots either way.

But these would be for wearing mostly indoors. I have a satin skirt I don’t wear ‘out’ in winter as it clings and feels chilly!

Thundertoast · 23/09/2025 19:49

Uniglo do fab thermals that are undetectable under clothing - you might be able to find some on Vinted if you search for heattech. They do vests and shorts.

Seaside3 · 23/09/2025 20:06

Haha, isn't that always the way with a bargain? @Twinstudy
@evtheria I do the sheer turtlenecks too. Got a few from h and m, they add warmth without bulk.
