Slim trousers: are they coming back?

Just that. Have been wearing wide legs for a bit but fancy a change.

Also saw Robin Wright Penn looking fab in cigarette trousers on The Girlfriend.

I reckon they'll ease off over the winter cos flappy trousers and puddles are not a good mix (and footwear isn't as easy to style) but they'll be back - they better be, I've got a wardrobe full of linen and denim wide-legs!

Harriet Walker (Times fashion editor) said this week that she suspects skinny jeans will be coming back in soon which makes me think that trouser silhouettes might also get streamlined…

God I hope not. Few and far between are people on whom it looks flattering. I remember when that particular fashion came around for the first time two or three decades ago and my grandmother asked my brother what he thought. He said "It makes girls look fat and boys look effeminate", and he was right.

What I truly hate about the dictates of fashion is that it becomes really hard to find things that don't fit it. For instance I like regular jeans, not super wide nor super skinny. Well, finding regular jeans is nowhere as easy as you'd think, at least where I live... (I also like low waist and trousers with actual pockets, not pretend pockets where you can't even fit keys or a small wallet, but those are rare as unicorns...)

I didn’t notice that slim (not skinny) trousers had ever been away, wide leg trousers have never been a good option for many of us.

I think trousers and jeans are seperate issues. Denim jeans are essentially the same item worn all year round. Trousers have different materials for summer and winter ( no one’s wearing velvet wide or narrow in August) so it’s more the overall styling that dictates width of trousers.
The vibe has been “relaxed” this year. I think as long as you aren’t too try hard matchy matchy you’ll be fine in whatever.

I much prefer slim to wide, they look dreadful on me, don't particularly like skinny or too skinny but the wide, barrel etc do nothing for me.
I bought some linen trousers from M&S in the summer and they went on Vinted.
Maybe it's me, others seem to like them.
Personally I think wear what you like and what suits you!

I’ve got a mixture of wide legged tailored trousers and 3/4 length slim, tapered trousers for work. I never stopped wearing the slim ones. I get bored with only one style.

Hedjwitch · 20/09/2025 20:02

Prefer flappy trousers myself. Time to dig out my wool ones from Uniqlo for winter

Jugglers876 · 20/09/2025 20:32

I'd love slim fitting jeans to come back in! I think wide leg amazing on other people but somehow I look ridiculous in them 😂

Exactly how I feel.
By slim I don't mean skinny.

I need some slim ones for work, wide leg are useless in this awful weather!

How do you keep them out of the puddles? I do like flappy ones to be a bit longer.

I tried on some slim trousers in Mango yesterday, they were green so felt more interesting. As an extreme inverted triangle I technically suit wider shapes though. I think we are still in the fallout from the pandemic when everyone wanted comfies (it's no coincidence that luxe tracksuit bottoms happened or trainers dominating). And it's hard to go back to tight stuff and heels once you've breathed out. But I wonder whether the mounjaro revolution will send us back to more form fitting clothes in the next few years. The 90s are definitely there pushing more mean silhouettes (and tiny handbags) already.
