Castor oil for thinning hair /healthy scalp?

Does anyone use castor oil for thinning hair?
I’m peri menopausal which I think is causing my already fine hair to fall out.

I’ve been doing some reading and it says that it could help? But other research suggests it doesn’t so not sure! I read about Minoxidil
too which we have at home but it says not to use for women?

I tried with some Rosemary oil last night and my hair is very shiny and soft but will it help? Will I just have shiny patches of hair?

When you say it’s helped, has your hair grown back, or has it just stopped getting any worse?

Have a look at Philip Kingsley products for thinning hair.

I've tried collagen (didn't work), rosemary oil (ditto). Have just started Regaine, which apparently has about a 60% success rate. Have to use it for 6 months to see any improvement and I've only been using it for 8 weeks, so no improvement yet.

Dr13Hadley · 16/09/2025 20:27

Minoxidil is fine for women! They generally use the 2% for women and 5% for men but in severe female cases the 5% can be used for women I’m just not sure about the side effects re hair growing in other places ie face……. Regaine is essentially topical minoxidil and can be bought over the counter. Minoxidil can also be taken orally.

I mix rosemary oil in castor oil once a week

LeaAndDer · 16/09/2025 20:42

Im losing more hair these days so I’m taking a vitb complex and eating more eggs! I’ll let you know if it works!

Whateverwillwedonow · 17/09/2025 10:23

Thank you for the replies, I’ll have a look at the suggestions.

@Dr13Hadley really? It says on the packaging not to use!

Never mind all this, just start eating an omelette every day for breakfast. Give it a few months, the difference will astound you.

I do eat quite a few eggs a week but will try to increase. Not sure if I could stomach a daily breakfast omelette.

That’s good to know. I’ll look into it, thanks.

Yes!
I love natural oils. I did a lot of research into different oils during lockdown and have managed to clear up my adult acne too, my skin is relatively breakout free these days, plus I got asked if I’d had Botox (I hadn’t, it was the CO!)
I also use castor oil on a spooly as a lash serum

How do you use it?

Baninarama · 19/09/2025 18:05

You need minoxidil (5%) and oestrogen replacement. Mucking about with oils etc is pointless and a waste of money. Have a listen to some experts: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0025l23

BBC Radio 4 - Sliced Bread, Hair Loss Products

Can wonder products halt hair loss and grow back luscious locks?

Dr13Hadley · 19/09/2025 21:44

@Whateverwillwedonow sorry OP I disappeared. Yes the 5% is fine for women but there is a higher risk of developing hair growth on the face/chin for example. It’s not uncommon for the 5% to be prescribed for women I guess they just want to be careful with people buying over the counter that they don’t go overboard iyswim.
