Need a going out dress for London! DH homecoming date night.

DH has been away with work for 5 months, one more month to go. To celebrate his homecoming our friend is having the DC so we can go to London together for a weekend, and I am beyond excited!

The plan is nice dinner out and drinks/cocktails after on the Sat night. So I’m looking for a dress where he says ‘omg is that my wife!’ (In a good way!!).
I want to look hot and fresh but I’m 45 and had two children (both sections) and have absolutely no idea what to wear.

I’m 45, 5’4, size 12 and quite rectangular torso with minimal waist (working on it at the gym and shapewear at the ready).

budget up to £100.

thanks to the gym I have good legs, so looking for knee length only.

Any ideas?

What colours do you like to wear?

How do you feel about necklines?

Usually quite muted colours, I’m quite a quiet person, brunette, pale skin.
necklines: usually a v neck style, open to all apart from high neck

Here’s a recent picture to show shape. I’d love some fresh ideas of what ladies my age are wearing for date nights.

Have no dress suggestions but you have a great figure!

DinoLil · 14/09/2025 16:29

I have no suggestions but just to say you look amazing. How about room service and birthday suits?!

Thank you, I’ve not heard of this shop so it’s great to see new stuff.

I like the low back of the second link, and the short one is super daring-wow I’d need some confidence to go for that but I think I’m looking for something totally different to my norm. It would need to be knee length but not longer -I’m not too tall so get swamped in longer dresses.
Really fun to see totally new options

I don't think any of PP's suggestions were particularly daring if you want a wow dress. Perhaps the disconnect is the desire for knee length - I just don't think you'll get a knee-length wow dress. It's not a fashionable length.

If you're going for mini, would you wear tights or bare legs?

I'd probably go something like this with bare legs

Or maybe something like this would be more 'you'? It's a little sexy without being trashy, suitable for a restaurant which can be hard with mini and no high neck IMO.

Sorry OP, did you actually want black? Just realised all of the suggestions are black! (Apologies to PP if there's a non black one I've missed)
Im just thinking that a colour that suits you that you might not wear often would be more wow on you, you have a fab figure and I think black might let that fade into nothing a bit. What kind of colours suit you - brights? Jewels? Pastels? Blues, greens, oranges etc?

Thank you, point noted about length-I’m so out of touch with trends

I love the second one, I really like the feminine style.

I don’t mind black, but open to others too. I like navy, turquoise, darker greens, dark raspberry pinks. Think colours that Kate Middleton would wear-think were the same pallet.
just looked it up-soft summer apparently.
