wide-leg trousers not practical for commuting - what's the alternative?

Started a new job after working fully remote for a long time, and have a 1hr bus journey and then a 15 min walk to the office. I desperately need a nice pair of trousers (smart casual) that I can wear on my office days - I only have skinny jeans (in black, sage etc) from a few years ago when I was last in an office! I see that wide leg is everywhere, but with the torrential rain recently I think that will not be practical over winter. Any suggestions for a shape that doesn't look old fashioned? Or should I go skirts and boots? thanks!

Straight leg, classic cut. Also, a work colleague recently bought some of those waterproof ones that you wear over your trousers. She loves them.
