Maxi puffer coat that doesn't make you look like a marshmallow

Does such a thing exist? I know there's only limited tailoring you can do with a long duvet coat but I've tried on loads now and surely someone must offer a kind of shape?

I've lost 50lb this year and this time last year I promised myself I'd buy a Sweaty Betty Nimbus (in blue) if I needed a new coat this year. That was a sight to behold when I tried it on.

Yes, I want to be warm this winter but I don't want to look like a blob. Anyone seen any with a good shape to them? TIA!

Place marking as I also need a long duvet coat to replace the one I had for 20 years which has lost its puff

I had a black one from Tesco a few years ago that my husband said made me look like a football manager, but I doubt that's much better...

Trespass Audrina is the best puffy coat with an actual shape

weareallqueens · 12/09/2025 07:59

I had a Next one that had an internal drawstring so you could (kind of) make yourself a waist. I think that’s the best you’re going to get with that style though.

I have one from Roman. Ive had mine for a few years but they're still doing it. This years is a purplish grey.

I.think a lot of this depends on how tall you are. Im 5'7 so that's tall enough for me not to look like a leaky space blob.

Karen millen do lovely belted ones. Super warm and a little stylish, I got one in the sale last year so reasonable price too

I was about to be facetious and suggest avoiding pink or white!

Otherwise, I agree with the PP who mention streamlined shapes or drawstring waists.

My friend looks utterly amazing in her superdry one.

I do not.

Comefromaway · 12/09/2025 09:29

I have a belted Barbour one

ThatWardrobe · 12/09/2025 20:25

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm also 5'7". They're not pink and white, but definitely a marshmallow shape 🤣 I'll have a look at the ones listed, thanks!

I’ve had a lovely dark green belted puffer from phase 8 for a few years now

Brummumm · 12/09/2025 23:28

TK Maxx has lots of coats at the moment - you could go and try a few styles to see if there's one less marshmallowy on you?

Well done on the weightloss!

Definitely belted to cinch you in and give shape, I notice that the big quilt pads add more bulk than coats with smaller or narrower pads. When they are horizontal they also add more bulk than if they were arranged at an angle like chevron pattern for example. The right length on your can make a difference so try different lengths. I'm a fan of faux fur hoods as they add width to your shoulders and can balance out the rest of the body. Obviously, if your shoulders are the widest area of your body you'd want minimalist and slim neckline and hood because your bone structure is already filling out the coat from top.
This is an example of a flattering padded coat:

Notice how the pads are narrow up then get bigger towards the hem? The faux fur hood and shiny buckle draw the eyes to your narrowest point and your face. The skirt part of the coat is also A line which flatters most bodies. Some shapes suit a cocoon or straight cut though.
I would also try to find a style without big pads on the arms as they make the body look wider, and stitched asymmetrically from the chest and back stitching to break up that horizontal line.
Obviously, going for a solid navy or black is the most flattering depending on your colouring and wardrobe. Make sure the sleeves aren't too short as that can make a person look bigger.

For anyone invested, I've ended up buying a Raleigh from Tog24 - I hit an outlet and tried on loads and loads and that was the most tailored shape. It was £76 cheaper from Next though!
