My 4th dc will start reception in Sept - older 3 all big and I'm feeling very old, frumpy and fat. Actually fat is the only real problem. Over the next 3 months I have a plan to be pedicured and trendy, but I'm terrified of joining a gym. Can anyone reassure me PLEASE - we have Curves, Bannantynes< Fitness First and an independent one within striking distance, plus leisure centre. Question - are there any fat hopeless over 40s at these gyms? Don't really fancy curves as there's no pool. All inspirational advice very welcome - am so sick of being a fat miserable blob. It starts tomorrow!

I think you'll find all shapes and sizes at the gym. Main thing is to go and take care of your diet too. Good luck.

swedish mum, its like the beach, there will always be somebody worse than you!
do you have somebody you could go with, might make it a bit easier at the beginning if you are not on your own?

I think the induction is my major hang up. I don't want to be criticised by some teenager I probably taught. Is there any way out of it?? And will they weigh me? Because if scales are on the agenda, I'm never going near a gym in my life.

How would you feel about an aqua class? I'm a forty-something hippo but enjoy exercising in the pool. It's an added bonus that I'm one of the youngest and by no means the biggest.

if you really cant face the gym how about doing other exercise until you feel a bit better about yourself?
sounds naff but exercise videos can be ok (and your little dc can join in and will love it) try to walk as much as you can. if you can loose that first bit of weight you will feel so much better about yourself that you will be happy to join the gym!

Wow Cod - 4 stones in 5 months - I think. That's brilliant. Mancy, I'm fine for a while with exercise vids - maybe I'll do it in 1 month chunks. Month 1 - lots of walking, exercise vid, much less rioja. See how I feel after that. Will drag a friend in too - obviously not checked with her yet though....

Will take a photo tomorrow then post with new one. I am more determined than I've ever been. Asthma is no longer my excuse. Feels more official writing it on here!

swedish, if they're not nice to you at the gym then go somewhere else! They will probably weigh you, but if they have any sense they'll explain that you shouldn't worry too much about what the scales say - go with how you feel/how your clothes fit. Don't let them bully you.

Davina's exercise dvds are some of the very few (IMHO) that are any good, they're technically ok, safe and really effective. Def worth a try.

If you're walking, remember you need to walk quite a lot more briskly than you think to get your money's worth out of it. You should be able to talk, but not in long sentences, not a long rant about something. Some huffing and puffing and a little bit of sweating should do the trick.

Have you thought about doing something like Boxercise class once you've got a bit more confident? There's something about getting the boxing gloves on and really going for it that just doesn't feel like exercise...

good for you for doing something for yourself!
