Work wear for large women? No idea, please help!

I'm about to start a new job, with 2 days in the office.

I've worked remotely for about a decade now. I have no idea what people wear to work these days!

What do you wear to the office these days? What are larger women wearing? Thanks :)

These plus long line tops and longer blazers - loafers/ballet flats /brogues/trainers/kitten heels are my work staple

i don’t do dresses as have lipedema so can’t advise on those - women at my office are either floaty floral numbers or monobloc knee length/midis either a jacket and belt with boots or loafers or trainers

They look nice :)

Any tips on where to find long line tops?

I have a few I love, but they're looking a bit worn now! Haven't found any I like online for a while...

Seasalt have a good range of dresses in a 24, and the fabric is usually decent although the patterns can be a bit OTT if you prefer plainer styles!

I like Next for workwear trousers (prev size 24, currently 20), some of their tailoring range is in a fabric with some ‘give’ which makes them more comfortable, especially around the waist (not stretchy though, so still look smart). I prefer a tapered leg that stops at the ankle, then a looser top to skim my middle - with big boobs, while I love the look of wide leg trousers and a tucked in blouse, they make me look like a barrel from boobs to shoes.

Yup, same! I love the look of a tucked in blouse but those days are long gone for me, sadly!

Same for jumpsuits. I'd love a jumpsuit! I'd live in them if I could. But I'm just the wrong shape, they make me look like a tellytubby! Not quite the funky-but-comfortable-yet-sophisticated I think I'll look like in them.

What's the quality like with Yours?

I love yours clothing. We have a ship in town and they have lots of smart and lose fitting long length shirts that can be worn with wide leg or skinny raisers and lots of smock type dresses.

There basic t shirts and vest tops are long and also actually have a shape to fit over the arse and hips and wash really well.

Simply Be, Yours, M&S, The key is comfortable fabrics you feel confident in, when you feel good, it shows.

What do people think to this dress? (Same dress, 2 colours, from Phase Eight).

I very much approve 😊

I'm size 20 and I have a very similar dress to this in navy and it is my favourite dress ever. I've worn it to work (office), to a garden party and I even wore it to the rugby with a denim jacket at the weekend. Really flattering and comfortable.

You may find it's more casual than you expect - my office is casual - jeans/t-shirts/trainers etc. fine although you are expected to use your judgment if you have any high-profile events in your day and dress appropriately.

However, as a not very tall, plump, big-boobed woman, I like to dress 'business casual' rather than 'casual' because I'd just look like a scruffy nonentity in jeans and t-shirt, so I usually wear a dress and smart cardigan. I buy 99% of my dresses from charity shops so I can change them quite cheaply when they get shabby! I wear them with loafers and I try to match my jewellery to look 'put together'. If I want to go up a notch for something important, I will wear a blouse, skirt and jacket but such events are rare in my job so I only need one proper business outfit 😆

My tip is to have a separate 'work wardrobe' even if you do find yourself going very casual, so you feel in work mode and it's easy to plan and co-ordinate your outfits.

Best of luck with the new job.

Vinted is where I mainly shop - eBay and Amazon also I would imagine . Shorter length with peplum might work also

Also H and M are great for shirts. Their shirts, over sized ones come up huge. Also look at their oversized blazers as they are good. I got some black jersey wide leg jeans from next and they look smart but are so easy to wear. They look like black trousers rather than jeans.

Hmm... just having a look at M&S work wear. There's a lot there, but at first glance it seems to be either separates which looks great but which just don't work on me as a tucked-in top highlights my massive stomach, which I want to hide.

Or dresses which looks pretty frumpy.

Where are the non-frumpy smartish dresses?

Dresses don’t have to look frumpy. I wore dresses on my in-work day for years and, with full(ish) make-up and tidy hair and shoes, definitely won the power game. Stick to navy or black in the main, fairly plain, dress up with jewellery and scarves. Don’t wear something you’d wear to the beach.

Have a look on the John Lewis website. Live Unlimited have some nice dresses. They also do White Stuff, which goes up to size 24, and a lot of other brands.

thinkfast · 08/09/2025 13:15

Quality in Yours is generally awful. I’m a similar size to you OP. I tend to mainly go with dresses from Phase 8 and Live unlimited.

marshmallowfinder · 08/09/2025 13:25

I love Bon Marche for well priced work trousers in 4 lengths and lots of plus sizes. I used to wear navy smart trousers with a nice top/shirt/pussybow blouse and long length smart navy cardi in colder weather. I got everything in Bon Marche! I'm size 22.

Ok, so I ordered the purple version of this.

I love the shape of the Vinted dresses. As long as the colours in the tartan one work for you they'll both be good!

24Dogcuddler · 08/09/2025 18:18

I second Live Unlimited especially in the sale
Next, La Redoute BonPrix.

Newjobnewclothes · 09/09/2025 10:34

Thanks everyone, some great suggestions here.

I've bought both the Vinted dresses.

Sorry, my post was badly worded!

I'm not saying dresses are grumpy in general, I love a nice dress.

I was saying the ones I saw in my search on M&S looked frumpy.
