OMG...Last night I cut my DD 11 years hair....

Usually do cut my childrens hair and sometimes take them to hairdressers. However for the last week or so my beautiful DD has been asking me to cut her hair shorter...she had shoulder length hair and wanted it in a bob. So after tea last night I cut it...it is a rather short bob...bit too short really but does look very trendy...but maybe too trendy for her age!!!..I love it and whilst she laughed and giggled at the change in her appearance she did like it. It does need tidying up a bit but I am gonna do that today when she washes it. Anyway I am concerned that the girls in her class may make a comment about how she now looks, and as my DD is quite quiet and shy it may upset her. She went to show my husband last night and he made a terrible comment angry(I am so so so cross with him for this) she came into me crying and said he didn't like it (god what planet is he on with an impressionable young girl). She is worried the girls in her class will laugh at her. I have reassured her it is lovely and trendy and they will probably copy her, the girls in her class are generally really nice but I hope you know what I am trying to say. I have been up most of the night worrying about her and wishing I had never cut it sad and hoping she is ok when she sees it again this morning. I am now not speaking to said husband.

Hope you mangaged to get this far, but some nice words of advice on how to reassure her it will be ok and if someone makes a comment how can she not let it affect her. I am upset with myself for putting my daughter through this so please go gentle.sad mum

Oh what a shame your husband didn't think before opening his mouth

we have all been there with a haircut we are disappointed with... its prob quite a good learning experience really!

Think she will be fine. Let her play with it and get used to it, keep reassuring her that it's ok if she doesn't like it but that you think she looks really trendy (as you have).

Maybe take her out to buy some sparkly hairclips or a new pencil case that will distract from hair - and get her used to being 'out' with her new hair too.

She'll be ok, really. (I cut my dd's hair too short too - but she's only 2 so hasn't noticed )

This is really stressing you isnt it?. DP's can be such a pita for stupid thoughtless comments.

I would try with him first and get him to say something good about her haircut today....something like "oh have you done something different to it today, it looks really cool, I mustnt have had a proper look yesterday!!"

Thenshe will feel better today. It is difficult no matter what age making a big change to your hair, some relish making an entrance and others will worry about it. But if your DD's friends are nice then Im sure they will be complimentary . it isnt anyones fault though....but i understand as her mum and as the one who gave her the haircut you will worry ((hugs)). She will be fine, she will get comments and I bet they are kind ones....how grown up she looks and how tidy her haircut is

stoppinattwo · 01/06/2008 07:25

Good idea getting the clips or a hair band?

she will look lovely no matter what XX

I would talk to your DP (much as you don't want to!) and ask him to reassure her that he likes it. Maybe he could say something like "sorry I seemed angry yesterday - it gave me such a shock to see you looking so grown up and trendy!"

She needs reassurance from him.

my mother cut my hair into a really short bob when I was about 10 or 12... I was worried at first but then I decided it was ok.. and I relized it would grow back thats what hair does.. and I remeber my mother letting me get some hairbands (alice bands) and some pretty clips and I was quite happy after that... my dad was grumpy about it at first but he got over it... Men don't liek change especially in hair, my DH grumbles at me when ever I get my hair chopped shorter.

I'm sure your daughter's hair looks great and will probably look even better in a few days, with various clips, and perhaps a new pretty smelling hair jel/goop/shampoo

My Mum gave us the most awful "page boy" cuts throughout my whole childhood and made me wear my brother's old clothes and I really didn't even mind in the slightest.

cositjustisok · 01/06/2008 09:47

Peasoup your post made me chuckle and brought back a memory of mine..my aunt used to cut our fringes and they where so far up our foreheads it was funny..think it was cause she lived quite a bit away from us, and would be a while till we saw her again

Meridian thanks for your post too..my hubby hates me getting my hair cut even slightly shorter too. Think you are right it will look better in a few days.

She is now up and ..yes it is short but she is still ok with it..i am pleased she still likes it. Swimming club this morning hope the gals are good about it..will keep you posted.
Thanks once again everybody
