I’m 50 in January and my celebrations will include a lovely dinner with close family and friends. I want to look fabulous and have £600 (or more for the right outfit) for clothes + shoes.

My issue is that following a car accident where I broke both feet a few years ago, I can’t wear anything remotely heeled. Maybe 1-1.5 inches tops and it has to be a chunky heel - nothing stiletto shaped. For the last couple of years I’ve worn chunky Chelsea boots with any going out clothes but I think for a 50th birthday something more stylish should be in order. Happy to consider boots or shoes, I know that finding the clothes will be the easy part so I want to work from the ground up!

(Outfit wise I’m 5’7 and a size 8-10 so without wanting to blow my trumpet can wear pretty much anything so the footwear will deffo be the difficult bit. I love the look of this but could never wear those shoes! www.self-portrait.com/products/sc25-burgundy-rhinestone-fishnet-midi-dress)

Your link doesn't seem to work, but I think I found the dress you like, & it's rather fab ...! I know it's in January, but you could wear this style of sandal with fishnet tights? Yes it's probably a bit higher than you like, but there should be something similar out there. I also like the leopard & the pink ...

These are probably a better height but I don't think they'd go with that dress. They'd look good with other outfits though? Gold or silver, or black with diamanté?

They also do some rather lovely boots that might suit. These are ankle ones - the metallic leather, leopard print or red leather ones would, I think, all be dressy enough with the right dress? Depends on whether you think you could wear that heel - for me, it's low enough but I find the shape of the heel a bit precarious. I'd much rather a chunky 70s block heel.

I did look on Chie Mihara as the slight platform padded front is really really comfy, & the shoes are less high than they look because of it. But the low or flat options are much less attractive than the medium height options such as this ...

Funnily enough the Anthro ones I posted a link for above, despite being both slingback AND leopard print, don't have that whiff ..??!

More Boden. This style is only good in the gold or the green stripe!

I was looking at Fly London last night, they have some interesting shoes.

Like some of the recommendations above but sandals in January might be a bit optimistic?

Turveytopsy · 01/09/2025 09:13

Some brilliant suggestions - thank you all!

I actually saw & loved the Air & Grace ones you posted in gold but they have sold out in my size. Love the style though. Some of the Anonymous Copenhagen ones are similarly styled and really gorgeous - not a brand I’d heard of before so thank you!!!

I’ve always dismissed chunky platform sandals (Esska & the such) as I thought they’d be too heavy & uncomfortable. I’ve never actually tried them though- would be interested to hear if they are heavier than a standard shoe.

The mention of Boden has reminded me of some nude pointed flats I bought from there donkeys years ago - I’ve always thought of them as a s/s shoe but I might be able to make them work for Winter too.

Thanks all!!

Glad some of them might fit the bill! (Can you tell I was wide awake & bored last night ...?!!)

@Lifestooshort71 Yes, I'd be bloody frozen in sandals in January, especially here in Edinburgh! But this is for one day/evening event - presumably more evening going by that sparkly Self Portrait dress! So I'm assuming the OP will be in a lovely warm restaurant & getting a cab to/fro any venue?

To avoid the look of bare legs & feet though, I like large-weave fishnets & painted toenails with sandals - a bit like this.

Another look I like (though it's not for everyone) is black or coloured opaque tights with sandals. Even SJP approves ... Depending on your dress OP, this could work too (the photos are of higher sandals than you need, but you get the gist) - though I think of it as more a smart daytime/lower-key evening look. Certainly warmer than fishnets! (Though I love those red sandals with fishnets - very Parisian!)

How about a pair leather knee high boots in brown with a low heel?
Jones bookmaker have some lovely ones

Turveytopsy · 01/09/2025 14:45

Yes, it’s an indoor evening thing so sandals will be fine but I’d like to embrace the fact it’s a Winter do & go for a style/ colour I wouldn’t wear in the summer.

Love the look of the fishnets & sandals together!
