October wedding guest dress

Could you help me find a dress please? I need a dress for an October wedding. The guests will be young but fairly traditional, so no white, black or red (although I think I could get away with burgundy).

I can find lots of things that would be ok but nothing I love. I've looked through the high street shops and places like Joanie and Hope and Ivy. I quite liked the Alberta ( I think) dress on Joanie but I didn't like the tier at the bottom.

I'm 5'6" and size 14, 32G bust and broad shoulders. More hourglass shape than anything else although I would like to have something flattering to my tummy area. It's not awful but I'm self-conscious about it. I prefer mid to long sleeves ( definitely not sleeveless) and I don't suit high necks. I look best in things with neat waists or empire line. I suit soft colours, dusty blue and pink, burgundy, grey, lilac. I'm in my 50s. I don't like animal print, tie waists or puff sleeves. I will probably wear a simple, flat shoe.

Budget up to £100 but would stretch a bit beyond for something I love. I know I should probably wait a couple of weeks for new collections but I'm going to be very busy and I need to order online so I need to leave time for returns and reordering. Thank you!

You could try Aspiga: they have a lot of dresses on sale at the moment. I got a long quite bright blue one from there a few months ago for my son’s wedding in September. I’m wearing it with a denim jacket and white trainers with a bit of gold.
John Lewis had absolutely nothing.

Have a look at the Ghost sale section. I got a fab dress for a wedding for £48.

Thank you. Good suggestions but I haven't found anything.

Lace and bead?

ANagsHead · 27/08/2025 12:35

When you say you don’t suit high necks - how high? I’m another broad shouldered person but would be fine with this neckline. Given the relatively low price I’d suggest sizing up and having it tailored to fit perfectly if necessary:

Lace and Bead were lovely but I think the wedding will be more casual. Thanks for the suggestion though.

@ANagsHead it depends on the sleeve and the material. A high neck with a short sleeve like that makes me look like a tank. I think it's the combination with my bust. I have never found a crew neckt that suits me, for example. Nice dress though!

As to renting, I don't get many chances to buy myself a nice new dress, so if I can id prefer to have something I could keep.

@MrsJigsaw I've seen that and been thinking about it but like the other floral and ruffly dresses, I think they're nice but wonder if I will feel a bit old fashioned. I'm not sure.

@MiddleAgedDread tell me about it! The Wallis one might be a contender.

Have you looked at Stine Goya? The current collection is outside your budget but they have a few dresses on sale that might be possible - if you have the patience to scroll through them. You won’t like this one - but I don’t have any more time so have stopped at this point:

There are some more summery prints and cooler shapes available.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

Have you looked at Hobbs? DM just got a lovely dress on there for a late September wedding and she is around the same size and wanted sleeves

MerylSqueak · 27/08/2025 22:54

That's a nice shape. I'll have a look.

I thought I would give this a bump as I still haven't found anything.

Thank you. Great suggestions. I don't think I would get away with the high neckline, I'm afraid. I was going to go for the red but they only have it in a 14 long and the reviews say even the regular is really long. But thank you!

Ghost dresses are so flattering.

That green on is rather lovely. I might see if I get a Sparks offer on dresses to bring the price down a bit.

Thanks. It's rather lovely. I am wondering about how it will look in wild west Wales in October. Thank you for your suggestion.
