Was thinking about getting some instead of paying £££ for prescription sunglasses.

a few ads keep popping up on my FB but always wary of comments saying how fab they are.

any one got a pair ? Views please

My prescription sunglasses were free with my last specsavers glasses. Love them.
Don't have to be expensive

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 25/08/2025 14:53

They all look bloody awful. I’m a glasses wearer so I wear contacts and sunglasses

TakeMeToAnIgloo · 25/08/2025 15:36

I think some of the magnetic attachment ones can look quite good. They're definitely much more convenient than having to have two pair and swapping. They are hard to find though as most places don't have a big selection. I love the convenience of mine, but less keen on the shape, so am on the lookout for other models. (I can't wear contacts).

BlindTipsy · 25/08/2025 15:42

I have some of the ones that sit over your normal glasses in the car for if I forget my prescription ones. I don't think they look bad at all. They're very light and sit securely over the frame. They obviously sit a little further away from your face than normal sunglasses but not so anyone would notice, particularly if you choose a large frame style.
They were really cheap from Amazon - less the £10 so probably worth a try. They're a bit like these but I just got one pair:

I use Overglasses, they are fine.

Kaggi9 · 25/08/2025 15:45

I have some glasses from Pair Eyewear, which have hundreds of magnetic topper options including sunglasses. I’d never go back now!

Buffysoldersister · 25/08/2025 15:46

I have the over glasses for driving, they work great but look terrible so I wouldn't wear them out and about.

thatsnothtepoint · 25/08/2025 16:17

When I used to wear glasses, I used clip ons so didn't have to worry about overglasses slipping down my nose in the heat.

My husband has the magnetic ones, they're really good. Look great as glasses or sunglasses.

Not sure it'll be much use, as we're not in the UK, but I'm sure similar must be available over there:

I don’t think prescription sunglasses are very expensive - you can get them for £100. This company are brilliant but I see they offer clip overs for £50. https://iolla.com/folding-clip-ons

Folding Clip-ons

Turn your glasses into sunglasses in just a few clicks. Shop IOLLA clip-ons at £50, including a cleaning cloth and faux leather sleeve.

I have over glasses. Probably cost £10-15 Have been told my prescription glasses underneath are not really noticeable. Choose ones that are a similar colour and shape to your glasses and larger.

Don't think I could get prescription sunglasses for £100 in my prescription.

Trovindia · 25/08/2025 19:37

I got some from Amazon and they are great, they look stylish and are comfortable

CharlotteCChapel · 25/08/2025 19:49

I have these . No-one has noticed that they aren't normal ones

I have Mint Magnetic and Eco frames. Both have the magnetic polarised sunglasses overlays. Brilliant, only have to buy one pair of glasses and I even have overlays that change the frame colour. Just bought a crystal clear frame with a great overlay from Eco. Lots of UK opticians have them now.

Resembleflower · 25/08/2025 20:38

Asda do transition lenses very cheaply. I paid £245 for one pair of varifocals transition glasses, and one pair of varifocals. Which I thought was amazing. They don’t go dark with a camera flash and change very quickly, single vision would be much cheaper. With transitions they don’t work in the car so I wear over sun glasses.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 25/08/2025 21:00

I think it depends on what your normal glasses are like. I have a relatively small pair of glasses and a £15 pair of overglasses from Amazon does the job perfectly. Before my eye surgery I was -20 in both eyes and clip ons were the only viable solution.

Tha Amazon ones are cheap enough to try and to keep in the car for emergencies even if they don't turn out to be the perfect solution.

Aparecium · 25/08/2025 21:14

I've got several pairs of overglasses. Some do look like what they are, especially the ones that have tinted windows in The arms. They're perfectly comfortable, but ugly, so I keep a pair in the car for driving. They are very good at reducing all-round glare.

I've linked to my current favourite pair. They are vastly more convenient than switching glasses, eg when going in and out of shops on a sunny day. I just push them up on my head, like ordinary sunglasses. Also much cheaper than losing or dropping a pair of strong varifocals.

I always reference Dwayne Wayne when people talk about this clip-ons, but nobody seems to remember him.

LOL, but my clip ons didn't flip up!

travailtotravel · 27/08/2025 15:22

Oh i bought some on jnsta after I'd had a wine on a Friday... came from the US so took a while but didn't pay customs fees. They sit over specs and are for the car so I don't have to faff changing between glasses and sunnies. They're fine but I'm not sure I'd want to flollop around inStTropez in them.

I'm just about to get a new pair of prescription sunnies online ... as I need varifocal there is no getting away from a £££ bill even in Specssavers!
