Looking for the perfect 70s style petite / short length jeans

Lovemycat2023 · 24/08/2025 10:13

I’m on a mission to find perfect jeans for this winter. Looking for dark blue 70s style flares, with deep hems and available in short length.

Budget is up to £100, and I would prefer if I could try them on in person (even if that’s in regular length). I’m usually size 12 - size 14. Thanks!

I got really nice ones from Mango last year and I’m sure they’ll still have similar. I think I needed to hem them but they’d be well within your budget so you might not mind paying for that.

I always wonder whether hemming / taking up works for flares? I guess maybe if it’s done professionally (and we have some great tailors in our town)

M&S have brought out some palazzo jeans in 3 denim washes and 4 lengths - extra short, short, regular and long.

I'm tempted but need to compare the extra short vs short.

hashisucks · 24/08/2025 20:17

I often have to hem but just about an inch or two (I’m short in the torso but take a 29.5” inside leg) - it’s always been fine but I guess if you had to take a lot off it might change the shape a bit. I think it’d be ok though.

CakeIsNotAvailable · 24/08/2025 20:37

I'm 160cm and I buy most of my jeans at M&S. I once spent hours on the second floor of Liberty trying on all the contemporary denim brands - but they were all far too long on me. I find hemming/taking up often spoils the appearance of jeans. So I go to M&S and buy their "short" length jeans. I have a lovely pair of slim flares I bought a few months ago. I'd suggest you head to a big M&S and try a few styles.

River island have always been good for me.

I have some that are called ‘wide leg’ but they’re more flare like imo and they’re so flattering.

Do they do different leg lengths? I don’t think I’ve been in a river island in about 20 years but willing to give it a try!

I rate M&S jeans. I’ve got their flares and I’m very keen on them - and I do remember my 70s jeans. Their wider leg are also good too in the deep dyes.

ChatGPTMadeMeDoIt · 25/08/2025 06:46

I tend to find that the issue, even with 'short' length, is the crotch to waist ratio. M&S are by far the worst. I am only 5.1" and have had some success with Hush but it's hit and mix.

Imagineallthepuppies · 25/08/2025 06:49

Levi’s do some lovely flared jeans. I can’t remember the name of mine but they are amazing. They also do different lengths, I’m petite and find their sizes really good.

Mushroo · 25/08/2025 07:59

@Lovemycat2023 they do! I only really go in there for jeans but it’s a great petite selection

TizerorFizz · 25/08/2025 08:25

@ChatGPTMadeMeDoIt That’s quite short though. I expect of you were 6ft you might find there’s a different issue. Very few manufacturers can please all of the people all of the time.

I know I’m very short and I get that manufacturers have to work to the average. The thing that frustrates me though is that the “short” ranges usually just mean they’ve chopped a bit off the leg length. Being short isn’t only about having shorter legs. I am very well proportioned. For lots of us our whole body is smaller and in proportion, so yes the legs might fit but then the waist is practically up by my bra strap. That’s not really a proper short fit. If you’re short, your torso is usually shorter too.
I usually just buy low or mid-rise and then get the leg taken up somewhere else if necessary.

TheOGCCL · 25/08/2025 09:20

I’ve never found a pair of mid or low waisted jeans in M&S, so despite wearing jeans all the time and needing short lengths and all the hype about them, I have never bought any in there.

River Island is a good shout as they do a lot of petite bottoms. As long as they stay a float. Also I still had to shorten some short jeans I got in there.

I tend to look for cropped styles, there have been a lot of cropped flares around which would be full length on me. Mango as PP said.

Flared jeans are hardest to alter just because you lose some of the flare.

Pixie Girl have some.

I’m just under 5 foot and buy from Levi’s- they do free alterations in store. My 70s style ones were £110 but there are discounts to be had by joining their list etc. I used to wear River Island short which were proportioned well too.

notnorman · 25/08/2025 09:37

Try pixie girl on next online x

I have a fab pair of wide legged button up the front 70s style jeans that I bought second hand but originally from Boden.

Might be worth a look as they do lots of petite sizes.

keepincool · 25/08/2025 10:18

Next have quite s good range of petite length jeans. I've had some ankle length mom style from there and they are well made, comfy and suited my short legs. They do wide leg in petite, including some patch pockets in dark and mid blue. They also stock petite jeans from River Island, Gap, Levi's (but you may only be able to try on Gap ones in store). Next do really easy in-store returns if you did order online.

I got some M&S flared cords last week. The short are a bit long on me - I’m 5ft 1in, so think the extra short would have been better.

Yeah, exactly the same issue. I’m 5 foot 2, and I don’t consider that unreasonably short!
