What brands should you like but don't?

As in title.

I'm an early 50's year old woman who's supposed to like Sezane, Baukjen, M+Em, Community Clothing etc.

I got a blue patterened floral blouse from Baukjen but rarely wear it (it's huge on too!).

Cos also isn't me and &Other Stories has got far too expensive.

That said, I did order some New Balance 530 trainers in white and silver and some Nike Metcon 10 trainers, will keep both use the former for wearing out and about as well as gym and the Nike's for the gym only.

I thought I’d like baukjen but I’ve had 2 orders and the buttons and holes kept loosening (button down dress) and recent order I gave them another go… pattern of fabric gorgeous but so thin, I felt like I would rip it! So expensive too!! I’m 51 😝

I am 55. I have returned everything I have bought from Hush in the last 3 months.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 18/08/2025 19:43

Cos. I know we're meant to love their clean-lined Skandi - ness but I love colour and pattern. Their stuff is so bland.

TheOGCCL · 18/08/2025 20:32

Yes I'm getting older but a lot of the next step up aren't really my style - Cos, Baujken, Mint Velvet, Hobbs, &OtherStories, Whistles and definitely not Me+Em. Am starting to find some of the tops in Jigsaw more attractive though.

minipie · 18/08/2025 20:47

Ha, loads of places. I think they’re mostly too grown up for me (I’m 45).

I like Anthropologie and Free People, I think they appeal to my inner scruffy teenager.

DancingNotDrowning · 18/08/2025 20:51

&otherstories.

im a perfectly normal sized albeit somewhat short size 10, 40 something who was looking for a casual day dress and faced with racks of dreadful unflattering nylon. I wouldn’t have worn any of it if they’d given it to me for free

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/08/2025 17:58

I don't know if I'm supposed to like them but I can't stand Phase 8 and Sezanne.

I had to google Baukjen and Hush - boring.

Overnightfloats · 19/08/2025 22:58

I can find something good in each of the above mentioned places but not any of them work like a one stop shop anymore. You have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find the one. I still get same t shirts from COS, Chloe from Sezane, just ordered Mattie jacket from Baukjen and have two newish Whistles sweatshirts. Everyone loves M&S but I cannot find anything to make my heart skip.

BUMCHEESE · 19/08/2025 23:11

& Other Stories. Often looks nice on the website or rail but clothes are often nasty polyester, weird cuts, unflattering.

Mango - for some reason nothing ever fits.

Have never kept anything from Hush or Boden, apart from one bikini about 15 years ago.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/08/2025 23:14

Toast and at the other end of the spectrum Phase 8 and Hobbs.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 19/08/2025 23:18

M&S. I end up hating everything I buy from there. It all looks shit on me. I turn it frumpy. The cut must be wrong.

I was a die-hard Hush fan for years, but that’s come to an end. Cheap shite now.

I’ve had stuff from Zara this summer, mainly because DS works there and I get 20% off.

I don’t have any favourite shops any more. It’s more, if I find something I like, I fall on it in gratitude and buy two.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 19/08/2025 23:19

Oh, actually, I’m a big Uniqlo fan at the moment. But it’ll go to shit eventually 😂

Magpie50 · 19/08/2025 23:37

I want to like Killstar as it ĺooks fun and I love abit of alt/goth but alot of it just gives me cos play vibes.
Oh, and I'm guaranteed not to like anything that could be described as classic, neutral or timeless....I'm not that kind of middle aged!😊

keepincool · 20/08/2025 20:48

I popped into Me+Em in Manchester on Saturday, expecting to try on loads of pieces and wrestle with the urge to splurge. But honestly, I didn’t get the appeal at all. There wasn’t a single item I felt tempted to try on. I know a few people who absolutely rave about the brand, but I found the clothes quite uninspiring. I’m 59, and I genuinely couldn’t figure out who their target market is supposed to be.

OurStepsWillAlwaysRhyme · 20/08/2025 22:43

Damson Madder is advertised relentlessly to me on Instagram and seems very popular locally but whenever I've tried it on I look completely absurd. So many flapping collars and weird shapes.

On the other hand I love Cos, despite being 5'3.

Affy expensive too!! Just had a Google....all for quality, but £200 + for a jersey?...no.
