Black jeans than stay black?

Anyone ever found a brand of black jeans that actually stay black? All I've tried so far fade to grey within a couple of washes...

My Mmarks and Ssspencer ones have stayed black.

But if you have some you love, try dying them back to black with Dyson machine dye. I regularly re-dye tops and t-shirts that have faded in the washing machine, with great results. I also dyed some blue jeans to a darker indigo.

If they are blended with polyester they are more likely to stay black. It's the cotton that's the main offender when it comes to fading. But yes, chuck some Dylon in the washing machine every few months.

Wash black denim in cold water with table salt. Been doing this for years and it works a treat!

If you dye black denim, you dye its distinctive weave that makes it denim and change it permanently. Black cotton jeans are different.

I wash all my trousers infrequently, inside out in a laundry bag, cold wash, minimum spin. I don't have a tumble drier and wouldn't use one anyway, Line dry in the shade.

A couple of washes?! (Are you putting bleach in??)
Wash them inside out, wash them on 30, wash them infrequently.

I do not use dye but use the Blacks cycle on my washing machine and the clothes detergent specifically for black clothes. It’s not a dye as it says also suitable for blacks with colour on them and it doesn’t dye the non black bits black, it just keeps the black looking fresh and black, no idea how that works though.

I use the M & S coloureds liquid, it smells lovely and you need very little. My blacks stay black, especially all the natural fabrics, cotton, linen, silk - manmade fabrics don’t tend to fade.

Do you mean by hand, or just add salt into a cold wash in the machine?

OK, maybe I exagerated! But probably only about 5 washes befor they go from black to more of a grey colour.
We do everything on 30 degrees, although I will now start washing them inside out, so thanks. I can't really wash them too infrequently because I wear them to work and inevitably get food or mud on them.

The dylon pods are great. A bit time intensive as you wash the jeans then wash with a pod in the machine, then wash again, then rinse. But any jeans I've used them for have stayed uniformly black, even one with a bit of stretch with the cotton.

QwestSprout · 18/08/2025 15:33

My black Levi's have never faded. I will point out that jeans should only be washed every few months unless stained.

Stoufer · 18/08/2025 15:37

Don’t standard laundry detergents have lighteners / brighteners in? Which probably cause deep coloured items to fade… Maybe switch to a detergent for coloured clothes, and keep a brightening one for your lights / whites. I tend to turn things inside out (read that somewhere once), and also tend to wash at 30 degrees on a short-ish wash. I use laundry sanitizer in the wash to help kill bacteria when washing at a low temperature…

Add salt, a teaspoon or so, to the detergent part of your washer along with the detergent.

Detergents for black/dark clothing are good. Agree with washing and drying them inside out.
