Can you help me with socks?

Right, I'm trying to move into the visible socks brigade , worn with an ankle graze trouser, or with my jeans (also a shorter cut)
I'm confused about what to wear with each type of shoe though
I really like the fancy sock look at have toyed with a glittery pair, or something more fancy
Here's my shoes : what goes with them sock wise
White trainers : should white socks go with these ? What type?
Chunky brogues (DM) these are black, if I wear with jeans or black trousers, should I wear thick denier pop socks underneath? Again, should these be black based?
Suede closed toe birkenstock mules in a khaki colour. I saw a woman wearing fair Isle socks with these , what do you think?
Burgundy adidas stripe trainers : get burgundy socks?
Please help , I feel like I have confused myself and nothing ever quite looks right!

Would I wear short socks with trousers? Yes, because otherwise I’d be too hot! Low calf length maybe? Or thin translucent knee highs if that was the look I wanted.

So for summer work wear, look at Community Clothing and pick some colours from the cotton socks that nod to your dress colours without being exactly the same. If you’re wearing trousers pick a colour that complements the colour of your top.

And for non-work wear you can be more adventurous. Look through all the links posted on the thread - while thinking about the clothes you’ll be wearing most over autumn / winter - and (alongside cost effective everyday socks) pick one pair for very cold weather, and one more extravagant pair for dressing up.

Speaking of hair colour, I wanted to suggest you consider a dark brown pair of DMs for your next purchase. I saw these, and am now almost weeping with frustration that I didn’t discover them earlier - they’re perfection:

This type of sock from Uniqlo - mine were all white in the pack but this kind of thing, a short ankle sock

Really helpful, thank you so much!

Ah, I thought maybe I’d listed some sock sources on another thread you might have been on. But if not - men’s ranges are generally better. Apart from fair isle, and the odd stripe, I don’t really bother with patterned socks and don’t own any white socks. And obviously you find them online!

Community Clothing

Corgi

Drakes

Maria La Rosa

The Cambridge Sock Company Wonderful selection, dull site.

Like hats, belts and scarves a great pair of socks can make you feel well dressed even if the rest of your outfit is cheap as chips. (Last autumn I bought one beautifully coloured wool pair from Margaret Howell and (in a misguided bid for thriftiness) a six pack of cotton mix from M&S. The latter were nasty from the start, the expensive pair have shaped my clothes shopping choices for a year and are a tiny snippet of good in naughty world.)

Brilliant thanks, I've not heard of any of these so this is greemat. I did find a mens outfitter in a nearby town though so I'll also go and have a look there

Can I run something past you @theglamour ?
Been considering my outfits. I'm a history teacher. My look is barrel leg trousers and normally a shirt tucked in . I have a short dark bob.
I have a burgundy shirt, navy trousers and oxblood patent brogues (new for sept) I was thinking a navy and burgundy stripe/paisley sock?

OP posts:
Mathsbabe · 09/08/2025 15:13

I knit socks, and wear them.

Singlehouseholdjoy · 09/08/2025 15:15

Next outfit is a short black crew neck jumper and wide leg trousers also in black , I wear this outfit with a white neck scarf (think rockabilly type) and white platform trainers. Black and white striped socks?
I've never considered socks before embarrassingly. They were always just things I got at Christmas with rabbits/ice creams/hedgehogs on

That’s considerably more considering than I might do, @Singlehouseholdjoy… For the navy and burgundy that sounds very complete. I’d probably go for something a little less deliberate - like a soft pink that tones with the clothes colours but isn’t the same. Or maybe a colour that refers obliquely (Hmm) to a stone in your earrings or whatever. (As I may have indicated I hate to look as if I’ve thought about my clothes. I like an element of randomness. But I know other people prefer a more put together look, so feel free to ignore me.)

Equally, with the second look - black and white striped socks to me would turn that outfit into costume, so it wouldn’t be my choice. But also I prefer things to be as versatile as possible and wouldn’t want socks intended only for one specific outfit. Probably something in a crunchy oatmeal knit - to subvert the rockabilly vibe. (I’ve never owned white platform trainers so am imaging the outfit with some clumpy flat white slingbacks I’m very much missing this summer.)

They are gorgeous.
I love brown Dms but because I wear a lot of black trousers I din't know if brown and black would be no good together!

Singlehouseholdjoy · 09/08/2025 16:32

I think I need to look more put together as the clash of socks is what makes me feel weird or at least that I have got it wrong. This might change as my confidence grows hopefully

Beautiful looks, I love the ballet socks. The price is bonkers though, but it's such fun to create these looks on a budget I can afford.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/08/2025 11:53

I’m in love with all some of the laminated Maria La Rosa socks and was contemplating a sock binge until I discovered shipping is an additional £27 and then custom charges on top.😳

Do whatever makes you feel most comfortable @Singlehouseholdjoy but I do think @TheGlamour again makes some very valid points.

What do you consider ‘put together’? Are you a person who likes things to be ‘matchy matchy’ or do you prefer more subtle coordination? For example, do you like your shoes to match your handbag or do you (like I do) run away screaming at the prospect of matching shoes and bag? That might help us understand your preferences / comfort level?

WorriedRelative · 10/08/2025 12:12

Look at ones with patterns made with holes, like this Ladies 2 Pair Elle Sparkly Pelerine Anklet Socks https://share.google/6xf2NhNodmY3zsnML
or the lacey or fishnet types of pop sock. I agree that plain sheer pop socks look very dated but opaque, patterned and textured ones can look great with some outfits.

TheGlamour · 10/08/2025 12:21

@HundredMilesAnHour if you google you’ll see which UK retailers are currently selling MLR socks. Generally they each only hold a smallish range rather than the full collection, but that’s obviously an easier way to buy them.

Thanks @TheGlamour. Yes I have already and managed to find one pair of silver laminated MLR socks that are winging their way to me as I type. Unfortunately they only had one pair in stock but maybe that’s for the best as the sizing sounds a little on the smaller side (and as per my earlier post I have huge heifer feet) so at least I get to test them out. And then maybe one day in the future I will consider a monster sock binge and cough up the customs duty and shipping if they fit my jumbo feet.

I haven’t been to Italy for years and had forgotten that they think women shouldn’t have feet larger than a 40. It’s bringing back memories of shoe shopping in Viareggio and asking in very bad Italian for size 41 boots. 😂

I'm watching with interest as I've been considering the same thing!

Also - best place to buy lovely socks.

Shop at sock shop or at “Pairs” - online, based in Scotland. Pricy but options for natural materials inc wool and cashmere
