Covering greys when I have balayage.... am I foolish?

Have rather growing out balayage :( but the greys are appearing....
Had huge boiler bill so can't afford hairdresser, could I DIY at home and just cover the top bits and avoid the blonde?
(Awaits calls of how depassè balayage is! 😆)

I do this all the time, it’s really easy. I only go to the salon twice a year now.
