OK, top tips for holiday style that don't require me to check in a steamer trunk, please!

I never seem to get it right on holiday. I always overpack and come back with most of my holiday wardrobe crumpled but unworn.
I'd like to look relaxed and comfortable but presentable when I'm on my hols. And I don't want to spend hours doing it. Any advice appreciated.

The destination never seems to make any difference to my rubbish packing but it's likely to be France or Italy.

[shamelessly cribs from previous thread]

I minimise packing by wearing stuff twice (ie come in from the pool and shower, put on clean dress for dinner, then wear same dress round town next day.)

usual packing list runs thus:

travel in:
lightweight trous
vest
l/s shirt
cardigan
shoes

pack:
1 other trous
wrap scarf thing
short skirt
long skirt
sarong
2 dresses
vests
2 s/s shirts
2 kaftanny things
pool flipflops
leather flipflops
underwear
2 bikinis

get laundry done after first week, including the l/s shirt and the trous to travel home in.
