Shampoo and conditioner when perimenopausal…

My hair is falling out. My thick lovely hair has turned on me. I’m 47. Peri. Taking Mounjaro. What can I do to soften it again, and stop it shedding so much?

I cannot for the life of me think that Cornish seaweed shampoo is going to cut it. Surely?

Am I better to look at supplements maybe?
Open to trying anything, that sounds rational! Or maybe I’m also open to the irrational and need seaweed shampoo? ;)

Take iron, biotin and L-tyrosine supplements. I used Elemis hair thickening shampoo. It stopped falling out after a while and grew back.

I take biotin, collagen and iron. No hrt yet but looking into it.

Years ago people would suggest horse mane and tail shampoo??

I'm not minimising how distressing it is, as i'm going through very similar, but I try to console myself that hair thinning as we age is very common, and yet I very very rarely see anyone who I think "God their hair is thin". So i guess whilst trying whatever cure/assistance you want to try is totally fine, don't forget you're likely to be your own worst critic. My hair looks thin and terrible to me, but I doubt anyone else would give it a second thought.

Same as when I'm looking critically at my skin from 2" distance in a well-lit mirror - most people don't get that close so probably think i look reasonably OK!

It might be worth getting some bloods done re iron/thyroid etc, as typically a supplement will only help if it's addressing a deficiency that is present. I've literally got a box of cornish shampoo etc downstairs, so as you can tell, I live in hope too! But I try not to get too down about it if you see what i mean.

Do you apply regaine to dry hair? I only need to wash my hair once or twice a week.

Yes dry hair. Dont use too much or it looks greasy. But I can still get 4 days ish before I need to wash it.

@ChristmasLightsLover are you sure it's not the mounjaro causing the hair loss? I know a few women with the same issue, all on mounjaro. Apparently you can lose up to 50% of your hair!

ohsososo · 03/08/2025 13:23

OP you are on mounjaro. Have you lost weight rapidly? Losing hair is a common side effect of rapid weight loss

if you have been losing weight rapidly, focus on ensuring you eat and that what you eat is high density nutritious food. It’s tempting to enjoy the rapid weight loss but the hair loss will continue if this is the cause and the shedding will continue for some months after you stop losing weight.

largeprintagathachristie · 03/08/2025 13:27

Isn’t hair thinning a known side effect of monjouro/the rapid weight loss?

TootlingTia · 03/08/2025 14:50

What pumpkin seed supplements do you take, please? I’ve been reading up on their effect on hair shedding so very interesting to see someone post positive feedback. Cheers!

I started pumpkin seed oil capsules towards the end of April.

Within 2 weeks my menopausal hair shedding had pretty much stopped.

I use these.

You can get them on Amazon too but there’s a 10% discount through Horbaach plus free shipping.

I am halfway through my second bottle. The capsules are quite big, I know this can be a problem for some. I take 3 every morning with coffee.

JMSA · 04/08/2025 09:23

The Cornish seaweed shampoo is shit. Sorry.

TootlingTia · 04/08/2025 10:49

@Clitmandu - thanks for the link. I’m waiting to get ferritin levels checked but may well then give these a go!

I'm prone to hair loss and low energy due to stress so I have started taking Doctor seaweed Immunity supplements and Collagen. I've noticed such a difference in my energy levels and less hair loss. Don't know what I'd do without them!
