La Marey Python Handbag - what am I not getting here?

Ok so I received this bag for Christmas from my MIL - immediately hated it and was shocked to see how much it cost when I looked it up online (though, TBF, she is normally a generous gifter but I just thought this was so ugly, it had to be cheap 🙈).

Mine is actually uglier than the web page shows - it's a rainbow effect colour that was on there around Christmas but now seems to be sold out.

I was going to stick it on Vinted but the few I see on there are listed at under a fiver. eBay is better with some listed around the £100 mark but when I filter for completed listings, they're not selling at that price.

So what am I missing here? Why are these bags so expensive new but with zero resale value? Has my poor MIL in fact been scammed?

Maybe the skin comes from the snakes caught in the swamps in USA. Got a bad problem out there and those hunters earn a fortune catching them. Invasive species so they eradicate 1000’s. Awful I know, but it’s what they do

Im struggling to work out what kind of outfit that bag would go with....its def making a statement of some kind!

Honestly not hating the black and white version though. If it was faux leather and £10 in Primark I might think it was a decent bag.

I bought some snake skin heels on eBay for £5 and they turned out to be real python. I thought they were plastic. I only found out when I took them to be re-heeled and the cobbler got excited.
I've not worn them since and I'm not sure what to do with them now. I really liked them too.

Thats not a problem as long as there is an excess of the species and that they are killed humanely.

It would be like us trying to deal with the grey squirrel population which have obviously decimated red squirrels.

Well what I’ve seen from the show the Everglades are flooded with them. Eating the crocs and all other wildlife. Can remember how they kill them, but the government pay these hillbillies thousands of dollars. Looks like a never ending problem. Maybe the meat and skin is sold on? Some of them are mahoosive, could swallow a man whole!

That’s incredibly cheap for a real python bag so it leads me to think that it’s all the cost of the skin & little to no craftsmanship/artistry. Synthetic suede lining confirms this. I’m guessing the hardware is cheap too.

such a shame because for £200 you can get some lovely leather bags.

If MIL is lovely don't you need to use the bag when you see her to show her how much you love it? At least a couple of times before you get rid of it. How awful if you got rid of it and then she asked you about it and you couldn't show it to her, and hurt her feelings. If you're not going to get much for it then keep it and show her your appreciation. I agree it's awful, I don't like snakes, but I like the idea of them being skinned alive even less so I'd want to get rid of it but I wouldn't want to upset a lovely MIL.

Would it be possible to recolour it? I mean, do you like the style? Would you use it if it was black? Or similar? Just a thought

Genuine python leader handbag. How disgusting. Pythons are beautiful snakes whose numbers are dwindling. Products like this feeds into their being hunted and reared in terrible conditions. Shame on TJC

Dear lord, that’s one ugly bag. I presume it’s meant to be a knock of Hermes but it’s missed the mark. You’ll have to use it at least once when you see her. You have my sympathy.
