Roots - what are my best options

My roots along my hair parting I’d say are probably 50% grey now, natural colour a sort of light brown. The Underneath section is still dark blonde/light brown (if natural) as it is much less grey. I’ve been blonde almost forever. Always had highlights really except one year when I went brunette. I quite liked it but everyone says blonde suits me.

My hairdresser says the best way for me to keep going is just highlights and some colour woven through (so I have bleach but also a tint on some highlights if that makes sense, all foils). She says a root smudge won’t work as it’s too much upkeep. But this is only 5 weeks since I’ve had my colour done and I’m already wanting it re done…not sustainable.

I am considering my options, my mum who is 100% grey but like me always been blonde has always just used a home colour on her hair and it looks fab. I know my hairdresser would not suggest this (obviously!) but also would it not work as the under side of my hair is still quite dark (ie not grey).

Can anyone offer any ideas of how to not go fully grey yet (I can’t anyway as it’s patchy!) but to better keep on top of my roots? Ideas for root touch up sprays etc also welcome. I’ve used one powder type thing and it’s ok but very drying.

i can probably afford to go every 8 weeks for the colour but even so this is only 5 weeks and I’m already not happy with it. I assume as it’s highlights / foils and not all over colour so the regrowth seems very fast.

You can definitely use a home colour as your regrowth compared to what you have mainly on show is already fairly inconspicuous.

I have mid brown/ dark blonde hair and pure white regrowth I use belle colour it's cheap and it works really well on the regrowth. It's a faff but I do it every 4 to 5 weeks.

I have toyed with the idea of going to a hairdresser to lift it all over to be in the position you are.
Thereby then carrying on doing the regrowth a lighter brown blonde at home.
But I don't have the money.
Plus tbh I don't think lighter hair would suit me.

I'm olive skinned.

I have slowly over the years gone from very dark (natural) brown to my now colour.
I'm talking 20 yrs.

Ask your mum what she uses?

Appreciate your darker underneath tho, but for what's on show id definitely go with what I suggested.
As your hair grows and over time you can reassess the underneath.
Mine was dark but gradually went grey everywhere, nape etc.

The grey that is coming in is beautiful. ( and I'm not normally a fan) .

During lockdown with no hairdresser I started doing my roots using Josh Wood permanent colour. It’s not a traditional ‘box’ dye and is not cheap. However it’s much cheaper than the hairdresser.
I know it’s not ideal but I’d be going to the hairdresser every 3/4 weeks.
I followed a few online tutorials on how to apply it and bought the Josh Wood application kit as well.
It is lovely and shiny and the best condition it’s ever been in. I go just for a cut now and even the hairdresser likes the colour, she even asked to see the box to check the ingredients! I’m 56 by the way.

Friend of mine has hair like yours and she uses a blonde box dye that’s sold in health food shops

Ok yes, so you mean just use a box dye or home dye on my root area (but perhaps not at the back where it’s you’re dark) and then occasionally go for some highlights too, I can see in theory that would work but am worried it might end up very patchy! I guess I could try a section (small area) underneath first or something. I find taking the plunge the hardest bit!!

I’m ask my mum. But she’s totally white now so I feel her colour takes really well, it wasn’t always as good as it is now from memory. Her colour now is similar to mine but all over. And I think it’s natural ingredients so I’ll share the info as well when I have it.
