Why does everyone seem to be so shiny these days?

Gone are the days when you'd buy these wee blotting paper things to get rid of the merest hint of shine on your face. Now it's all about the highlight and blindingly highlighted tip of the nose it seems. My beautiful niece appeared at a family event at the weekend, looking amazing as always but, according to her dad, looked like 'she's been dipped in duck fat' because of the shine literally everywhere - chest, legs, every bit of exposed skin was glowing. Judging by her Instagram pics, all her friends are the same. Is this the equivalent of body glitter back in the day?

"She looks like she's been dipped in duck fat" is one of the funniest phrases I've ever read.

The current beauty fashions are designed to look good on Insta, but are often quite odd in real life.

Haha ha dipped in duck fat… it is the trend to “glow” I’m not sure the greasy duck fat look was what she was going for.

wizzywig · 24/07/2025 11:25

It's the glass skin thing

Cantcalloutanythinghere · 24/07/2025 11:26

😂 I tried a new primer over makeup recently recommended by an influencer and my 4YO DD said 'wow mummy, you're very sweaty' .

SoftandQuiet · 24/07/2025 11:26

I keep seeing people with that yellow shiny 'bronzer' on their faces. Think it's supposed to look sun kissed but just looks like...yeah, duck fat. At least my greasy face is now fashionable!

Britneyfan · 24/07/2025 11:29

Your dad is hilarious! Dipped in duck fat hahahaha!

ZanyMauveCat · 24/07/2025 11:31

And there's me still using blotting papers daily 😂

R0ckandHardPlace · 24/07/2025 11:34

It’s Sod’s Law that the horrifically greasy skin and fat arse that I’ve struggled with all my life suddenly become en vogue as I hit my 50s. 🤦🏻‍♀️

TitaniasAss · 24/07/2025 11:37

I was absolutely paranoid in my teens about shine. Matt all the way. When I look back at photos now I look like I'm in 2D. 😀

As someone who’s 26, the glowy skin is absolutely in right now. But it’s more because of skincare etc., which then shines through under minimal makeup, rather than anything else.

10 years ago I was caked in foundation and powder, but now I’m in a Charlotte tilbury glowy foundation stick and a setting spray! I much prefer it.

I didn’t realise we were meant to be making our bodies glowy too though!

Many cultures have been shining since the beginning of time with the likes of shea butter, cocoa butter, kennel butter, etc. As usual these things are ‘adopted’ and taken to ridiculous levels. The trend will pass sometime soon, I guess …

The young girls at work all have massive, matt duck lips in a sort of liver shade, shiny skin, and those hideous long pointy nails painted in every colour under the sun - but this is then paired with the drabbest, ugliest, most shapeless clothes that do nothing for their figures.

Yes I know I'm older and out of touch with modern trends - I'm relieved!

Shufflebumnessie · 24/07/2025 12:20

It seems as though every beauty product or make up item I look at recently promises to give me a "dewy glow".
I'm 46 and in the midst of peri-menopause, I can produce my own "dewy glow" any time of the day or night!! What I want is something that mattifies & hides my "glow" not enhances it.

I know I'm not the target demographic but I honestly don't understand why anyone wants to look like they've been "dipped in duck fat" 😂(Love that description!).

overwork · 24/07/2025 12:29

Oh this is brilliant, finally, my sweaty face that has been embarrassing me for the passed 5 years is in!

LaurieFairyCake · 24/07/2025 12:31

Yes I’ve stopped wearing powder in last 3 years

fetachocolate · 24/07/2025 14:28

I am never without my blotting papers - best thing ever. As far as I'm concerned Rihanna made them cool 😉
