To ditch the hairdresser?

I’m at the stage I need my hair coloured every 6 weeks. Apart from the increasing cost, issues getting an appointment , I’m not happy with the colour. I’m considering doing a DIY box at home. I know they get bad press but looking at them they seem to have come on lots in terms of hair care.

I would still visit the hairdresser a few times a year for a cut. so those who DIY hair colour any tips? What brand do you use? I’m mid brown naturally but a fair bit of grey

I’ve boxed dyed for years, I use clariol nice &easy, my hair is down to the middle of my back so I use two boxes, there’s always the colour guide on the back of the boxes to tell you what shade the colour is best for and what result you should get x

I box dye mine and never had an issue. So much cheaper!

Yep I've used Superdrug mango copper since before the pandemic. It's a lovey copper and covers grey, I get compliments on the colour.

They've some nice blonde shades too but one thing I'd say is that it always comes up darker so go for a slightly lighter shade than you actually want.

Do they work on grey hair?

Mine does, I've loads of grey, but I would check the small print to make sure.

It should say if it covers grey. Some don't. You probably need somebody to help you with the back unless I guess you rig up mirrors to see behind you. My hairdresser told me during covid she had to get her boyfriend to do the back when she was dyeing her hair.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 21/07/2025 01:35

I use Schwarzkopf. My hair is probably 80-90% grey at this point and it covers it. To get the back I just rub it all in. The most annoying bit I find is how easy it is to get dye on furniture or your clothes by accident during the process.

L'Oreal Casting Creme Gloss. Used it for decades, even when my hair was about 80-90% grey. It's easy to use, gives good coverage and leaves the hair in great condition. Only stopped using it when I decided to grow my grey out a few years ago.

Depends on what you want of course but this is what I do: every 6-9 months get a half head of warm blonde highlights. Then do my own roots every 8 weeks with a dark blonde box dye. As long as the highlights are not to stripey and scattered evenly and naturally it should be fine. Works for me, very reasonable cost wise and low maintenance. Haven't had highlights for ages as its summer and my hair lightens naturally.

Another one using the mango copper superdrug box. Its great. Its a lovely colour, covers well and fades to a decent colour too. My grey definitely persistent and quick growing. I could never afford to have it done professionally as much as it needs it. I usually do a touch up every 4 weeks (and it needs it!)

Gettingbysomehow · 21/07/2025 20:09

I've let my hair go back to it's natural colour dark blonde and grey. I simply can't be arsed with the expense and roots.
I'd sooner buy nice clothes with the money.
Clairol didn't cover the grey for me and balyage cost £200 every 8 weeks.

Oh I'm glad you like it too! Yep I do mine every three or four weeks and it covers the grey brilliantly.

I buy the three together as it works out so much cheaper.

L’Oréal- covers the greys well

alternate it with an esalon colour every 2/3 times.

all work on grey & much cheaper & easier than the £70 my hairdresser charges for a root tint.

BearBuggy · 21/07/2025 20:34

Thanks all. I’d love to go grey but I don’t have quite enough grey. If I didn’t like her so much it would be a non issue.

😀 I think they are fab value!

I often use them in parts too, so like a root touch up, and they work well. I am a bit naughty though and sometimes put a touch of the superdrug wash in wash out bottles in too. Give it all a shake and it comes up lovely. I like that it's got a decent viscosity, so doesn't drip much either
