Please help me to fine lots of small, non hideous lampshades!!! (For a family of gnomes)

The flat we're shortly moving into has wall lights in both the largest rooms (bedroom and living room) which is good in a way as the ceilings are high. (stepladder to change bulb= not good)
BUT they are nasty vintage ones, and I am blowed if I can find any nicer ones to replace them...also the shades are going to need replacing at least, and there are 4 doubles in the main room and 3 doubles in the bedroom.

So we are talking 14 small and potentially hideous and tasselly shades.

Surely this is a challenge the most ardent MN googler cannot meet

Eek

I wonder whether Ikea ones would fit. Prob cheapest. Or BHS always good for lighting.

ninedragons · 27/05/2008 12:16

Laura Ashley might be worth a look.

If you have a super crafty friend, I am told lampshades are very easy to make. If you strip the existing ones down to the wire frames, someone who knows the business end of a glue gun can replace the monstrous fabric with vellum card.

fluffyanimal · 27/05/2008 12:16

Have you not found any you like by googling? We have all wall lights in our downstairs due to low beamed ceilings. We got them from B&Q and Homebase. They are somewhere in between contemporary and traditional, pretty simple in style.
here
and here
We also googled lots and found loads of sites, with all kinds of styles. What do you like? Uplighting? Down lighting? Contemporary? Classic? Brass? Chrome? Black?

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 12:17

Lol at the gnomes, btw. HOw about these?

WonderingWhy · 27/05/2008 13:29

Ah! Answers! My little friends I had given up hope!

Thankyou, Fluffy they are great but I am now leaning toward celebrating the yukky brass fittings and just doing the shades, as 7 sets would be so expensive to replace.

JackieYes! Those ikea ones are lovely. We haven't got an ikea near us but I might take a trip to one over the summer, as I love going there and haven't been for years.
I wish they delivered lampshades!

Generally I like Habitat or similar stuff the best. (only ever buy it reduced though )

Nine, I will go and look at L.A. but your friend's idea sounds fine - I'd wondered about re-covering the little blighters but wasn't sure how easy it would be. Certainly the cheapest option I think!

Would you believe I actually used to make lampshades, by hand - I have a knitted one in my hall.
Seriously.

Yes I will knit fourteen little lampshades. That is the answer.

Thankyou!

I will just have a look, LEM, thanks

Anxious to avoid this kind of delight

Sorry that's Lucy'smum, not LucyEllen'sMum!

I like those ones you linked to.

JackieNo · 27/05/2008 13:41

lol at the 'Georgina' (misprint for 'Georgian' do you think?). Truly hideous.

WonderingWhy · 27/05/2008 13:43

Even if I dyed it purple it would still be nasty wouldn't it?

Or maybe not...

With a bit of pink pom pom stuck round the bottom.

I am liking that rather too much probably!

OP posts:
JackieNo · 27/05/2008 13:44

Well you'd be embracing its hideousness. So maybe you'd get away with it in a post-modern, ironic sort of way...

RustyBear · 27/05/2008 13:46

Is your gnome family related to my gnome family WW?

WonderingWhy · 27/05/2008 13:49

Yeah Jackie I get the feeling that's what most of Habitat's stuff is about

Too far round and you come full circle!

Rustybear all I can truthfully say is OMFG that is their long lost cousin Cyril in the back row.

Thank goodness for MN, they are all dancing with gratitude. Had looked for Gnomes reunited for them but it says website under construction atm.

OP posts:
RustyBear · 27/05/2008 13:57

Would you like to reunite Cyril with cousin WW? (Of course, I couldn't separate him from all his family, so you'd have to take them all....)

DH's grandfather was in partnership before the war in a landscaping business, but he bought himself out. The partner went on to acquire 11 garden centres in SE England - DH's family have 17 concrete gnomes.

Though why ended up with us instead of SIL, who used to paint them every year, is a mystery to me .....

WonderingWhy · 27/05/2008 14:00

Sorry but your SIL's dedication has rocked me

Excellent.

I have to confess at this juncture that my gnomes are, in fact imaginary

in the best sort of way though.

Yours look very, ahem, happy.
