Ever tried to grow your highlights out?

I have been geting my hair highlighted for years now. But I really fancy a change and would like to save the money I send on it to buy clothes instead . Can you dye your hair over the top of the highlights so the roots aren't so obvious as it grows out?

you can do this, but the dye will take much more obviously on the highlighted parts of your hair

I grew mine out about 2 years ago, suffered terrible roots for a few months then had a much shoter haircut and they were gone!

Dyed it brown, hated it so have grown it and highlighted it again!

I'm back where i started

not sure about putting a colour over the top though, maybe talk to your hairdresser.

i've got colour over highlights in past but at hairdressers. wouldn't attempt it at home as they do something complicated involving peroxide. No more highlights for me and you do save money and no skanky need to get my roots done look! plus hair is now more manageable as in better condition.

Yes, i've done this before - at a hairdressers. Wouldnt try it at home either.

It is ok, but obviously the colour fades quicker over the highlights.

slinkiemalinki · 26/05/2008 21:45

Yes - a hairdresser can do this for you - I have to report the same experience as ambercat though - back on the highlights too!

expatinscotland · 26/05/2008 21:47

I do this.

I used to be able to afford highlights when I was working FT, but I can't now, so I just use semi-perm colour I do myself now.

I have grown mine out and am now plain brunette again. Reckon it's my last chance before the grey hairs creep in! But my highlights weren't very blonde to start with.

If you are short of money, try the local college where they are doing hair and beauty courses.

I went for a cut and blow dry and the whole thing cost me £8!!

Am going back for the colour after half term!

You can choose when you go and if you use first years or more mature students too.

Was great! and although it took a while I got coffee and had taken magazines and was as happy as Larry!!
