Box dyed my hair orange by accident. Help me.

Ok so I’ve been growing out my grey hair for a few years. A few months ago I realised how much it was ageing me & decided to box dye it using Nice N Easy Demi-permanent medium ash blonde. I didn’t love the colour (I was hoping for a dirty blonde but it was definitely more chestnut) but decided it was better than the grey. I’ve redone the colour twice since & it’s basically turned my hair an horrible brassy orange. What can I do? I can’t afford to have a hairdresser put it right but I’m clueless about how to get it to where I want it to be. Do I try dying it a different colour? Blue shampoo? Toner? Help me!

What a nightmare! - ive done this a few times and tried various things. This toner worked best for me - after extensive research... https://scottcornwall.com/product/colour-res
Link should take you to super cool ash colour restore by Scott Cornwall- you can buy it at various retailers online. I have long hair and tend to whack on the whole lot and leave it in for the longest recommended time. It doesn’t look grey like on the box, but you can end up with a slightly greenish tinge, although everyone else denies they can see that and it’s definitely much better than the orange. Also, makes my hair quite soft rather than feeling dried out like some toners do. No connection with the company - just tried a fair few products for the same problem and this one worked best for me. Good luck! x

If you want to try and remove it as it is a semi permanent then Vit C tablets and dandruff shampoo will shift it .
I used about 20-30 crushed to powder in a food processor with some Superdrug

(like Head&Shoulders) shampoo , leave on a while .You can find all the details online
Condition well after .

Or there's ColourB4 but I haven't tried this

Omg avoid ColourB4, it turned my hair into a uniform pale orange

A hairdresser told me to use medicated shampoo and it helped

Also stinks like eggy farts , need to rinse, rinse, rinse and if you don't rinse enough the dye re-oxidises .
VitC is a doddle in comparison ! It got out my disaster mahogany ( pink IRL) dye

If your using box dyes , don’t put anything on that has a 3 after the level example
7.03 that wud be a level 7 blonde/brown gold
go for 1 example
7.01 this is an ash !
whatever level u want with a number 1 should naturalist the warmth ! ( hairstylist )

Londontown12 · 05/07/2025 09:27

If you try to remove with potions lol vitamin c or colour remover this will just expose more warmth
Or u could use a toner with blue in them !

Greyhairhelp · 17/07/2025 09:23

@Londontown12 Thank you, that's really helpful. I'd used a colour with the number 73 which was described as 'Medium ash blonde' but I'm guessing this could be the problem? Sorry for my total ignorance but can I cover this up with another semi-permanent box dye? Or is that really asking for trouble??

You could use a semi same level but ash with a 7.01 because box dyes do tend to be deeper than salon brands that’s may cover but hair dye can be so unpredictable u could always try your local college and get trainee to do it they are well supervised and it’s costs pennys !! X

I saw a product recently in B+M (Home Bargains) that claims to remove dye from hair . Haven’t ever used it, so don’t know how effective it is.
