Help, I don’t know how to dress after weight loss!

I’ve lost 5 stone in the last year and I don’t know how to dress this new body! I used to live in leggings and baggy jumpers but I need to get to grips with dressing for summer and I don’t know what’s flattering. I love maxi skirts and tried this one on today, I love it but the button top doesn’t go at all, does it? I’m well aware it’s too small at the button area due to having a large chest (32G) which I find makes it even harder to find flattering tops that don’t accentuate this area. I tried it with a baggy tee tucked in too, but I’m just not sure. Any suggestions?

Wow well done on the weight loss, that's amazing. I can't see the photo yet so not much help! What size are you in now? At the moment I'm wearing a lot of light coulotte style trousers. Im a 12/14. They're nice and comfy and keep me cool. (I'm not brave enough to wear shorts or short skirts! )

atwtmvtv · 01/07/2025 20:52

@pushthebuttonnn ah thank you, the photos are under review - not sure how long that takes! I’m a 12 now, also love culottes style trousers but again I struggle with tops to go with them. I think the biggest issue is my chest being larger as I feel like it pushes non-fitted tops out and I end up looking shapeless, so I end up wearing fitted cropped styles more but again I just don’t know how flattering that is! I guess it doesn’t/shouldn’t really matter as long as I’m comfortable, but I’d love to be able to be a little bit stylish for once!

Congratulations on the weight loss.

Do you have a budget in mind for new clothes?

The buttoned top is simply too small - size up. The t shirt doesn’t really work with that skirt.

One thing I’d suggest for your new wardrobe is to maybe vary the fabrics of separates in an outfit. Unless they’re co-ords or a suit. (You might possibly want to be refitted for underwear, too.)

atwtmvtv · 01/07/2025 20:58

@Bailiwitch thank you, I think they’ve loaded now! I’m a 12 now and lower end of the budget so high street - New Look, H&M are my current go tos!

Well done on the weight loss! I love maxi skirts too. Maybe a fitted plain t shirt with a round or scoop neck or a boxy t shirt with a round neck? Either in white or in a colour that is in the skirt? I think something plain so it’s not too much with the pattern of the skirt

Fluck · 01/07/2025 21:03

I love the maxi & tshirt! I’ve also lost weight & no idea how to dress though 🤣

socks1107 · 01/07/2025 21:05

I’ve also lost some weight. I follow two people
on instagram who are in their 40s and dress great. - I’ve basically shopped from their links

pushthebuttonnn · 01/07/2025 21:15

Oh I can see it now! I love the buttoned up top with it. You look amazing 😍

Bubblebubblepoppop · 01/07/2025 21:19

I think the button top looks great with the skirt, but the tshirt doesn't go at all.

Strangerthanfictions · 01/07/2025 21:24

I have this exact r shirt from new look and wear it just like you do with a bias skirt, very on trend look at the moment, loads of my friends wear the same. The other top is nice too but maybe a bit small, try darker colours , stretch waistcoat or sleeveless knitted tops are nice. You look amazing 🤩

Thanks all, any links to Instagram accounts for style inspiration would be much appreciated! I’m early 30s.

Tried on a few more combos before bed. I try and avoid having my chest exposed but have always been told this style is more flattering (polka dot top). Tried the skirt with a plain scoop neck tee I have, maybe I’ll get some more of those in lighter colours? The baggy tee could be okay tucked in with jeans I think? The button top I’m still just not sure if it’s working for me and my boobs - I’ll try it in a bigger size!

Think I need to go shopping this weekend!

Congratulations - you look amazing! I have a busty friend who wears a lot of wrap over tops with v necks and they sort of come in at the waist. She wears a 14 top and 12 bottom. She also wears wrap over fit and flare dresses but has to have a 14 for the top to look good.

I've just seen the pic of you in the polka dot blouse and it really suits your shape!

Edited to add I note you shop in New Look and they have several variations on that style of blouse. https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/tops/red-textured-button-up-peplum-top/p/932039260

LaurieFairyCake · 01/07/2025 21:36

You don’t need a bigger top

Also, newsflash - you don’t have big boobs anymore Grin

(just like I don’t, I’ve got from a 34H/J to a 28F)

tuck everything in doing the French tuck, Zara is good for your shape (I’ve bought so much in Zara in last few months)

One is called oh.my.marks and the other mamalovesleopard.

brilliant pages to get inspiration from and I’ve bought loads from their recommendations

well done on your weight loss btw

EggnogNoggin · 01/07/2025 22:02

I think you would suit something fitted around the boobs, like the white polka dot top, but tucked in or meeting at the slimmest part of your waist (not necessarily your belly button)

doingmyboxin · 01/07/2025 22:05

Well done on the weight loss, OP!

I’ve been debating with myself whether or not to but that spotty top, and you have just convinced me. I hadn’t considered wearing it with my ochre wide leg linen trousers.

Strangerthanfictions · 02/07/2025 05:38

I think the spotty top is a bit aging, get on insta and follow a few accounts then you'll start getting loads of ideas in your feed

StarlightLady · 02/07/2025 07:55

Well done on the weight loss. You look amazing.

I’m going to disagree, l think the button top works well with the lovely skirt in the first pic. Maybe try with the top button undone as well to give a more casual line? Perhaps look for some v neck tops as well?

I’m a 36F so understand about containing significant boobs. I tend to live in dresses, l love my dresses, ones with fitted tops work for me. And you don’t have to think about what goes with what.

Obviously, l’m in summer dresses now (l have a few where, apart from at work, are OK without a bra in the hot weather), but l have quite a number of winter weight long sleeved ones as well.
