Men’s swimming shorts without the pants

Is it possible to buy men’s swimming shorts without the net pants inside? We’re going on holiday in a couple of weeks we’ll be spending a lot of time on the water and hopping in and out of the water so DS wants to be able to wear swimming shorts shorts most of the time but he finds the ones with the net pants inside very uncomfortable so on previous holidays he’s gone to change whenever he wants to go in the water. Which is a pain for him but preferable to sitting around in the net pants. This holiday is far more watery in general (cruising and sailing as well as just being on beaches etc.) and he would prefer not to have to change.

we hope to go cycling and explore to beaches which are off the beaten track etc. then have a dip to cool off, dry in the sun and then back onto the bikes. All of which is easier the less we take with us and certainly easier without having to change.

We just cut the netting out.

lechatnoir · 27/06/2025 22:20

My son is the same and hates the shorts, especially if there is sand so I just cut them out

soupforbrains · 27/06/2025 22:21

Yes ive cut them out before but he sometimes finds that uncomfortable too as depending on the make it can be easier or harder to get them ‘cleanly’ out.

hence I was wondering if anyone knew of a brand which sells them without the pants.

Yes, you can get them with a boxer type lining. Here is an example from Amazon. My husband wears them and says they are a million times more comfortable than the mesh ones.

won’t his bits & pieces pop out without the mesh bit?

Simonjt · 27/06/2025 22:58

If he doesn’t want the mesh he needs to wear buggies underneath, or get proper fitted swimshorts, rather than baggy ones.

Shein. I bought my ds a few pairs as he liked the design and we were surprised to find they didn't have the netting in them.

But also you could just cut it out, use tweezers or a hook to unpick the stitching fully.

I don’t think board shorts always have a lining, iirc lads doing dinghy sailing/windsurfing would mostly wear those rather than shorter swimming trunks. With rash vests of course.

Thanks all!

My teens get horrible rashes from the net part. Decathlon have loads of styles without, as do Quiksilver.

Where are you going on holiday? I live in Spain and all the teen boys here wear underwear under their swim shorts, which i thought was a bit disgusting until it was explained to me that they cut the net bit out and wear the boxers to stop things escaping.

Zooeyzebra · 28/06/2025 01:32

I think a lot of the surf brands, Billabong, quicksilver etc don’t have a lining. Most of my sons don’t have

You said what I was thinking Grin

Interesting thread. My husband cuts the mesh out of his - the shorts are plenty long enough to cover everything! But, I've been bemused this week while on holiday by the number of men/teens who go swimming in swim shorts clearly wearing their normal underwear underneath. Surely the underwear takes ages to dry and that must feel really uncomfortable?!

MAFSQueen · 28/06/2025 09:04

What about Jammers?

soupforbrains · 28/06/2025 09:47

He already owns jammers because he plays waterpolo but he is self conscious and wouldn’t be comfortable sitting around out of the water in jammers.

I’ve ordered some board shorts from both Quiksilver and Billabong. Some of their shorts listed as board shorts did have the net pants so did have to have a bit of a rummage about but hopefully the ones I’ve ordered are free of the net.

he wears swim shorts that are almost down to his knees not sure how his bits would be likely to pop out but he’ll probably wear jammers underneath.

we’ll be in Italy, Greece and Turkey and the islands, al over the Aegean really. So not Spain where it sounds like he might fit in well sadly.
