It was £6.00 in the charity shop today. It's 100% cotton from H&M, the colour is a light stone. It's not everyone's cup of tea but I love the embroidery.

How do I make it look chic rather than like granny's nighty!

I can belt it to bring in the waist but then it loses the volume and flow. I've got black, brown, white or silver trainers. I have got patent black shoes but they rub. Not much in the way of sandals, just bright pink ones or cream crocs.

I've got a meeting in London on Friday and this could be perfect for the hot sticky tube...

She'd look like she was off to a fancy dress party as a Roman Centurian.

OP - its not for work. Beach. Bed. Backgarden.

Ancient Greek is a brand… the style of shoes I was recommending are called fishermen as per the picture attached they are very on trend.

@SpottyBumPony

I’ve been in the office today (Piccadilly) and the weather isn’t that great. I wore toteme barrel jeans with a tee. @Kwean Toteme is also a brand not a style of really long trousers 😂

SpottybumPony I think the dress is absolutely fine for the city but it would need to be worn on one of those really unbearable days when its sooo hot that no one cares if you wear a bikini on the tube. It could also be a really cute nod to the tennis if worn in the 2 weeks of Wimbledon.

I’m sure you’ll look gorgeous ignore the naysayers.

Saw someone who had a similar idea earlier this week, @SpottyBumPony - it’s not the best choice if you want to impress:

My god it would be AWFUL in winter layered with tights- that’s a truly terrible suggestion.
It does give nightie vibes and definitely not suitable for a work meeting.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 26/06/2025 18:49

Beach cover up? Loungewear? Nightwear?
im sorry it’s not suitable for a meeting but could prove to be very useful for things you haven’t yet discovered

PashaMinaMio · 26/06/2025 18:57

Do not wear this to a city meeting.
It looks like a nightdress.

IF you do wear it, please wear a slip/petticoat under it. Tights might help to give it a bit of polish but that defeats the object of being cool on the tube!

ringoutsolsticebells · 26/06/2025 19:25

God that's awful

henlake7 · 26/06/2025 20:30

TBH it doesn't look enough like a nightie to me! If it was white and had actual embroidery as opposed to broderie anglaise then I would chuck on some birkies and lots of jewellery and go for it (just read a Vogue article how vintage nighties are trendy this summer and i like the look).

But for days out shopping or a casual friend meet up, not for any kind of professional meeting.
Also I'd worry the stone colour would just look like it had got dyed in the wash, unless you went colour block with matching stone ballet flats and bag which could work.

Gymbunny2025 · 26/06/2025 21:33

I kind of like it. I don’t think it suits you though sorry OP 🙈.

Fiver555 · 26/06/2025 21:46

I took think it looks like a nightie. Sorry OP.

Game0fCrones · 26/06/2025 21:49

Its a lovely item but its not right for London, a meeting or your body type op. Sorry.

heldinadream · 26/06/2025 04:23

I have to say I agree with everyone but I have an idea that MIGHT save it. And I do love a chazzer buy.
Dye it yellow - the embroidery looks like it's a dark colour or colours so it should still stand out. Iron it to within an inch of its life so that it's crisp (don't sit down or get crushed on tube! 😂). And wear dark green trousers under it - maybe linen wide leg? So you're wearing it as a long tunic.

Otherwise, well, I thought 'Beach. Bed. Backgarden.' was succinct advice.

She'll look like a flipping daffodil..😂

Runhomejack · 26/06/2025 22:32

I would belt it and wear over wide leg linen trousers, maybe navy. Flat sandals and big earrings.

RobertaFirmino · 26/06/2025 22:52

Oh goodness, no. It will look nice in context but not for a work meeting. My advice is to get the iron out (and this dress needs ironing) and get the sleeves turned up properly and neatly. Pop a couple of stitches in to hold them in place. Could very well be see through so good bra and knickers are a must.

Jasrun · 26/06/2025 22:57

It’s more like nightwear.
