I'm going wild swimming with some colleagues. They are all young and I am 63. They invited me and I love swimming and really want to go however I've lost 5 stone and the tops of my legs are awful and I need a bra at all times.
A skimpy swim suit is right out.
I bought these, board shorts and a rash vest with short sleeves, do you think I will get away with these without looking like a ponker.
I have visions of them thinking I look like I'm wearing a victorian swimming costume with bloomers and a hat!!!!

I think you will look very cool, actually. Go and live your best life! Comparison being the thief of joy and all that. Go and have fun!

Dweetfidilove · 25/06/2025 14:00

Those look really cool. Well done on the weight loss. That's an amazing achievement 👏🏾.

If it's any consolation @Gettingbysomehow , my Aqua Aerobics class has 30 folks of all ages and sizes and there's a whole tits/tummies/everything display in the dressing room after each session. Everyone is busy laughing, chatting and supporting- absolutely no judgement. Enjoy your swim.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/06/2025 15:16

Very nice, good price too. I'd look good in those I think now I'm slim enough to wear them.

Skimpy isn't the right thing for wild swimming. What you've chosen is fine.

Tontostitis · 25/06/2025 15:46

61 and I still wear a bikini. Well more a two piece than a string. My belly sticks out my cellulite wobbles and I try to pretend I don't have batwings. What I do do is remember when I was young and gorgeous and focus on my good bits.I have glorious skin and hair and a very small waist. I believe those youngsters will be lucky to live as long as me be as financially secure loved and happy as me and my body is a physical history of all my struggles and all my triumphs. As an ex fitness instructor this body paid my mortgage for 25 years it may be a bit knackered now but it's done a fabulous job. I'm damned well not hiding it as if aging is shameful. It isn't it's bloody glorious.

StanfreyPock · 25/06/2025 16:34

I usually wear a tankini sometimes with swim shorts, v comfy. Have just bought a legsuit and find it a nightmare to get on and off, especially in hot sweaty weather, just sayin'

Congrats and enjoy your swimming! Second the booties, it's my feet that really feel the cold 🥶

LlynTegid · 25/06/2025 17:14

You could of course also have the uniform of wild swimmers in Brighton for afterwards, a Dry Robe. Also available for dogs!!

Celynfour · 25/06/2025 18:09

My young and oh so beautiful daughter and I go wild swimming . She is very athletic and perfect !
She always wears shorts and a racer back rash top .
def 100% every thing goes
wild swimming is def for enjoyment and personal pleasure

Ohnobackagain · 25/06/2025 19:13

You’ll be fine @Gettingbysomehow by the way, there are some really nice patterned rash vests on Amazon as well if you want a selection (I have some Surfeasy and Besserbay ones from there and am a similar age group).

Zebracat · 25/06/2025 20:02

I think the shape of those is lovely. The most visible colours in water are pink, orange and red, I know you might feel more self conscious but it’s safer, and wild swimming is less predictable than pool swimming. Have fun.

Plantladylover · 25/06/2025 20:14

very well done for losing 5 stone. that's amazing-you should be mightily proud of yourself.
I'm sure no one is looking at anyone else. Probably too freezing to care :)

ilovesushi · 25/06/2025 23:58

You will look amazing! Have a fabulous time. I hope the water isn't too cold.

FlamboyantlyIncognito · 26/06/2025 06:35

Congratulations on the 5 stone loss - that's actually amazing. Swim with that confidence, forget about them....... No one is perfect, everyone has hang ups (however beautiful or slim you might feel they are) and everyone has shit going on at the moment. So don't worry about them or what they think - let them worry about that. You just go and swim with that inner confidence and in the knowledge that you've done something brilliant for yourself.
You only live once and actually, does any of this shit matter anyway when you're 6 feet under?

Just go and swim and bugger them. Brilliant work on the weight loss. Swim with that wonderful knowledge that you did it.

dayslikethese1 · 26/06/2025 06:47

Probably dumb question but do ppl wear a bikini top under a rash vest?

I'll be wearing a lightweight bra under mine but yes they do.

One of the things I love so much about outdoor swimming is that literally noone gives a shit about how anyone else looks. It's incredibly liberating.

Edited

Absolutely!

bridgetreilly · 26/06/2025 12:37

Definitely get some water shoes. I find that is the biggest thing which improves my wild swimming experience!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 26/06/2025 14:23

Looks good

more and more women wear shorts I notice

limescale · 26/06/2025 15:25

When it's this warm anything goes, but when it get a bit cooler and getting dry quickly is important, a 2 piece is so much easier than a one piece costume.

The less flappy fabric the better really as the wind can make the water choppy or (if in a river) you'll be in a current.

exaltedwombat · 26/06/2025 19:12

OMG! Sixty-THREE? Saggy boobs? You realise everyone will just stand there pointing and laughing? Better confiscate their phones, else you'll be all over TikTok!

Or, perhaps... :-)

Ohnobackagain · 26/06/2025 20:45

Also @Gettingbysomehow when it gets colder consider a dryrobe type coat. I tried about 5 brands and eventually settled on the 2 barefeet one. I looked at the big brands, the cheap ones and everything in between.

Thefsm · 27/06/2025 02:22

Wear whatever you are comfiest in. I wear swimming leggings and a swim suit but when I first got back to the gym I was so embarrassed I wore a full arm length neck high rash guard with ankle length leggings. I’m losing weight and swimming more, but I’m never going to love my legs enough to bare them publicly.
