Good budget hair straightener

My trusty 15 year old GHDs died today 😭😭😭😭
I've got up to £40 to get a decent set for now to tide me over till I can get some more GHDs.
Please could you advise on something within that budget?
Thick hair, slight wave, varying lengths depending on my mood 🤣
I'm in a grow out phase ATM but it could easily revert to super short at any moment. Equally I might get it long and decide to keep it for a while, who knows 🤣
Any help much appreciated, thanks in advance xx

My daughter has really thick naturally wavy hair and these straighten it no problem. I've got Cloud Nine ones too but the Remington are way better.

I second these. Had GHDs for two decades, but these have been amazing and a fraction of the price!

Agreed. I have aging GHDs and a friend recommended these as a back up . I went for it as the price was so low. They are fantastic!

OhSoSalty · 23/06/2025 23:05

Thank you I'll have a look at them!

@JustFeedMeCake and @Ornamentalcabbages

how does the argan oil bit work? Does it lubricate hair? Does it smell?

TheFormidableMrsC · 23/06/2025 23:31

I’ve got Remington ones. They were about £20
on offer in Boots and they are excellent.

No smell, and no obvious residue on hair, it just leaves it very smooth/no frizz (I have thick, curly hair and it makes it look like I have naturally straight hair)

Thanks for the Remington recommendation on this thread. My trusty GHDs are starting to take a bit longer to heat up which leads me to suspect that they may be on their way out. Are they lightweight? Might get some for holidays (and it will be good to have a backup should the GHDs give up the ghost!).

pizzaHeart · 24/06/2025 17:12

Thank you @Ornamentalcabbages I have thin soft hair so any kind of residue is not good for me.

My adored Braun is very old so I started thinking about a new one. Unfortunately Braun is not available in UK any more 😢

I got the Remington ones and they were amazing for straightening (but not as good as my Cloud 9’s IMO). The only thing I found is my hair ended up like straw after about a month of using them - so much so it was breaking. My hair is normally very shiny and in good health. It is fine though so that could be why - yours may be ok with it being thicker.

OnyourbarksGSG · 24/06/2025 18:15

My daughter rates her wide plate Remingtons above her old ghds.

dragonfliesanddandelions · 25/06/2025 07:09

If you buy GHDs on Amazon you can spread the cost over five months. I would do that rather than get cheaper ones. I've had Remingtons. I liked them when they were the only ones I'd used. I bought GHDs after borrowing some from a friend and they are so much better.

jeaux90 · 25/06/2025 08:14

I’ve just checked Which (I have a subscription) and they say the Remington shine therapy is a don’t buy as it’s not good for heat protection. Best buy for value on that test was the Molly Mae Beauty works one.

jeaux90 · 25/06/2025 08:15

GHD originals were the top by the way.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 25/06/2025 08:29

Another vote for Remington. I have the wide plate ones as I have ridiculously thick hair and they work well.

isitmeamithedrama · 25/06/2025 08:44

The Remington ones in the first post are hands down better than my GHD and cloud 9 ones. Far lighter too
I got them on a boots deal for £25

FairyPoppins · 25/06/2025 09:31

I have the Remingtons as my holiday straighteners, Cloud Nine for home, and a very old pair of GHD's at my partners - I'm not good at remembering to bring stuff home with me 😁
I have thick, coarse hair with a wave, rather than a curl... I rate all 3 brands, but the Remingtons are definitely the best value for money
