Wedding guest outfit

I have never posted in S&B before but I do love reading the wedding threads. My style, such as it is, is casual. I am short and quite fat and cannot wear dresses or jumpsuits, even when i was slim, they make me look very dumpy. What works best for my shape are jackets or shirts over trousers. My question is, is this outfit dressy enough for a wedding?

That outfit is for a tall person! Your best bet is to start by looking at sites for petite women where everything will be proportionately shorter and will look much better - I know because I’m short too and have huge difficulty finding anything that fits! We shorties don’t want to go out looking like one of the Bisto kids! Good luck sure you’ll find something lovely.

Bisto kids made me laugh! I am short but my legs are long in proportion so I take a regular leg length, I am a difficult size to fit. I also find that most petite clothes are generally not for fatties. I am taking all the advice on board though.

I think it’s gorgeous. I wish I’d found something like it when I was MoB. It’s too tailored to resemble pyjamas.

Honestly if anyone paid attention to all the posts on MN S&B about the amount of clothes only being for tall/thin/young models almost nobody would ever buy anything.

I don't know who "petite ranges" are supposed to be for. I'm 5'3" and according to some posters I shouldn't be wearing about 95% of my clothes. When I used to buy Hobbs , even as a size 8 I found their petite range too short and skimpy.

It’s horrible.

if you are short and fat you want something in one colour or pattern all the way down as two colours chips you in half and makes you look stumpy.

Deadringer · 22/06/2025 12:56

I actually like that but it is cheap, I have seen it on amazon for about 20 quid I think. I have been searching online for a similar style but any I have found so far are sold out in the bigger sizes. I might have better luck once the autumn ranges are out, thanks for the input.

The trousers are stunning and I would wear them with a plain, tailored ivory jacket/blazer and a plain hat. Gorgeous

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 22/06/2025 13:06

Sorry but that is absolutely awful. It's dreary, fusty, nylon "mother of the bride" in cheap looking polyester. I've nothing against good polyester (Erdem, Sister Jane, Baum und Perdgarten for example do good polyester) but that isn't it.

Are you referring to the outfit DeSoleil posted? It's horrible. Your orginal choice is a gazillion times nicer.

I like it. Could you wear lime green heels and natural varnished wide straw hat and bag.
It reminds me of rice paddies.

Edited

Yes. I don't love it, but the shape is good for me, sort of boxy top and slimish trousers. I don't want to drip feed, but I have scoliosis so can't wear anything in any way fitted on top which is why I like jackets. The jacket will be staying on too, so ideally something light. I really have painted a picture haven't I? You will all be thinking that quasimodo is looking for style tips. 😂

It doesn't look like pyjamas and is much nicer than that outfit. It's a pleasant change from the usual Phase 8 wedding stuff.

I like the “pyjamas “ better! The pale blue suit is nice, but not special enough.

Pinty · 22/06/2025 16:12

I think the outfit looks really nice and not at like pyjamas. It looks much too dressy to me to be nightwear

OP wear what you feel comfortable in. You will never get everyone to agree on what is or is not suitable wedding guest wear

OneLoudTiger · 22/06/2025 16:13

I like it OP! It is a little pyjama-y but in a glam way and that’s the vibe just now. Once you’ve got heels on and hair/make up done then it will look lovely.

Deadringer · 22/06/2025 17:30

I will buy it and see how it looks. I might replace the buttons to make it look more like a jacket. Thanks again

I like it, will look great once you have accessories.

Andoutcomethewolves · 22/06/2025 18:06

I'm also short and a bit plump OP and that would look dreadful on me - too wide legged and baggy and the print is too busy all over. A shame as it's objectively quite nice but on a tall slim woman! Though you may be a completely different shape to me (I'm pear shaped) so if you haven't already I'd at least try it on.

I really liked the blue suit from Next a PP posted. It's not something I'd personally choose but I think it's very smart and would be flattering. Maybe with a different but complementary colour silk top underneath

What about this....

From Reiss. Expensive but could pair with cheap cream wide legged trousers and cream accessories. Sorry don't know how to do links.

Deadringer · 23/06/2025 00:06

That top is very nice Temp and would be a good shape for me but I think it looks a bit casual. I don't think I would be capable of 'dressing it up' I am not clever enough with accessories. Cheers though
