Makeup setting spray?

TillyandFlorence · 17/06/2025 21:00

I have not-great skin (rosacea, scarring) and use Estee Lauder Double Wear, but get to the end of the day with much less makeup on my face than I started with. I do use a primer.

Can anyone recommend a setting spray suitable for every-day use, that actually works? I have tried the benefit one but I didn't really see any improvement.

Or any other ways to keep makeup looking good all day!

Thanks!

Is that the L’Oréal infallible? That is honestly amazing for the price! Only thing I hate is it smell is a bit like hairspray, but worth it for the long lasting make up

OverlyFragrant · 18/06/2025 13:52

Honestly, I used to use the loreal spray before it became an aerosol and it was incredible.
I now use Urban Decay. It's not better than infallible but it works.
The trick is to use setting spray between layers. So spf, setting spray, moisturiser, setting spray, primer, setting spray, foundation, setting spray, blusher, setting spray.
I use the hairdryer on my face to speed up the drying process.

Spf under moisturiser 🤔

That's what the manufacturer of mine recommended. It's skincare spf.

Ah ok.. a specific brand. I always put spf on last. Maybe you don't even need moisturiser if it's skincare spf.

Absolutely sure. I’m a make up artist and it’s common knowledge that it’s not a fixing spray. It adds moisture back to the skin 🙈 nothing setting about it! The urban decay setting spray is amazing as is the kryolan fixing spray.

This is really useful to know, thanks. And it explains why I end up shiny and smeary when I use the MAC spray. I don't need extra moisture adding, I make enough of my own 😂

It confuses everyone because brands label them all incorrectly sometimes lol

the Mac fix plus setting spray melts the make up/ provides hydration, does not provide any ‘setting’ at all. That’s why most people find the make up is oily shiny after a few hours. Especially us oily women!

I would always look for a fixing spray. They lock the make up in place. If you need anymore information I’m happy to help

What are the best fixing sprays in your opinion? I also have the Charlotte Tillbury one, is that an actual fixing spray or another melting one?

meagain3 · 18/06/2025 18:26

Urban decay all nighter

TheFormidableMrsC · 18/06/2025 18:27

Charlotte Tilbury is my favourite and works very well.

shardlakem · 18/06/2025 19:53

A powder option is laura mercier translucent powder, rolled on with the puff. I've always used that over double wear and it lasts all day even with the heat!

TillyandFlorence · 18/06/2025 20:46

Thank you so much for all these ideas and opinions!!! Makeup is not my strong suit so this is all so helpful.

I think I'm going to order a small size of the UD one and see how that goes to start with.

Revolution's Sport Fix is incredible and very cheap. I have tried their others when I couldn't get hold of the Sport one and they're next to useless on my skin but that one is my holy grail. ELF Power Fix and the L'Oréal Infallible also did nothing on my skin but I can see loads of people saying it's brilliant for them. The makeup gods are cruel.

I’d probably say the CT one is a melting one as well. I’m sure it doesn’t have alcohol in it? Or it’s not the main ingredient. It is good but deffo not a finishing spray

the L’Oréal infallible, urban decay all nighter and kryolan fixing spray are the ones I use most! That and a good setting powder, Laura mercier loose powder (translucent) and huda beauty are my 2 favourites

Elf Power Power Grip dewy setting spray! Much better than the UD one for me personally.

Ive just switched to this from the urban decay all nighter and its brilliant!

CT is definitely a fixing spray. It gives a glow but it certainly does the job. I’ve got a sweaty face and run round after children as part of my job and even today, I came home with decent looking makeup after being in 30 degs all day. I really rate it.

Not for me it doesn't 😥It's a tiny bit better than the MAC one but not by much.

That’s a shame. I hope you find something better for you! Not everything will suit everybody.

AndSoFinally · 19/06/2025 20:14

You need a better primer and a foundation that lasts longer/suits your skin better.

Make up wears off from the underneath because of the oils in your skin. Unless you're touching your face all day or you work in the rain a setting spray won't do much

I've tried a couple of different primers (Benefit, Too Faced, currently using a Smash Box one) and many different foundations over the years. I think Estee Lauder Double Wear is supposed to be about as long-lasting as they get, and it definitely does a better job than others I've tried.

My scarring is one of the issues - I think generally makeup doesn't stay as well on scarred skin.

Make sure your primer has the same base as your foundation eg water-based, silicone-based, otherwise they don't sit well together and neither do what they're supposed to

Ooo thanks. I actually have no idea but will check!
