Altering a man's suit to fit a woman

Helpmechooseausername · 10/06/2025 20:51

My DD 16 wants to wear a three piece suit (trousers, jacket, waistcoat) to her prom.

I just can't find anything in my budget, and have had no joy trawling through vinted and eBay.

I can find loads of men's ones though. How big a job is it to adjust it to fit? I guess buttons need to be swapped over (do they??) and then the whole lot fitted to her shape.

Is it a massive job? I'm thinking about the lining etc.! Any idea how much it would cost?

Thanks!

Massive, far more expensive than buying something that fits her in the first place.

Can she let go of the jacket? I feel like a waistcoat and some trousers would be easier to source.

A fair bit of work as the lining needs to be removed to put darts in.

Are you a sewer? If you can do it your self and have time and patience it's possible.

Unless she wants it to not fit be sort of over sized and boxy.

I imagine suits like this are straight from Shein etc. I’d just get one there in the first place. Although I suppose getting the fit right for a suit will be extra tricky.

How about finding a two piece (jacket and trousers) on eBay and looking for the waistcoat on a separate listing? Next did loads of women’s trouser suits with waistcoats.

You can usually tell if it matches as the lining will be the same colour, or the waistcoat might have a satin back in the same lining as the jacket.

Thanks, I had a sneaking suspicion that it would be a big job!
Thanks for the suggestions too. I showed her the Amazon one / have discussed getting a separate waistcoat / ditching the jacket but no! She's being picky, and I guess rightly so as it's her prom!

It’s lovely.

slightly cheaper at Debenhams.

I naively thought I could teach myself to alter a man’s jacket to fit me. Completely delusional. It was the shoulders that defeated me because you have to resize the armhole too. I even found that some seamstresses wouldn’t take it on, not because they weren’t capable but because it wasn’t worth their time.

I did find a boy’s suit jacket in the H&M teenage range that fitted me (age 14). This was a few years ago so I don’t know if they still do them.

Yes, I've seen it, but it's still £150 😬 thanks though

Edited

😂 'completely delusional '!!

DD is tall and a size 12-14, too big for the teenage ranges now. Thanks though
