No more cardigans what do I wear

I've decided I don't like cardigans I just feel frumpy in them, I don't mind long ones to shin bone, I have 6 short cardigans that I keep trying to pass on when I declutter but they always end back in my wardrobe unworn, just incase, that includes a hoodie, I have 3 and never wear them, what can I wear instead, its just this kind of weather where you have on sleeveless top and it turns chilly.

A few months ago, I would have said the same. However, having recently tried on a few lovely but lightweight cardigans, I really felt dated in them. (Am loathe to use the word frumpy but tbh, that is how I felt).

Thick, chunky cardigans are a different matter as they're more like jackets, but 'summer' cardigans are something I can't imagine wearing for a long time yet. I do like sweatshirts but they're not a substitute. Have started to wear more open/belted/knotted shirts in lieu of cardigans, Am really enjoying this.

Each to their own but hard disagree. My husband bought me this for my birthday and I've had so much wear out of it.

It's a pretty cardigan, but totally not my style nor in colours I would ever contemplate wearing.

BusterGonad · 08/06/2025 01:10

I think it's about the style rather than it being an actual cardigan. I like v neck cardigans (big boobs), chunky buttons, finishes on the waist, preferably with a think band at the waist. I also love a crochet or open knit for the summer. I do not like long cardigans, or fine knit crew neck. I really like chunky 80s or 90s designs too. Once again v neck, chunky buttons or zip.

Linen shirts are great. Can tie them up or wear as they are. I hate this word but I find them quite chic 🙈

Well go you. Open/ belted/ knotted shirts arent mine. They would look ridiculous over , would swamp my dresses and skirts and I'd never contemplate wearing them.

I think they're an overdone cliché.

Thank you to the poster who mentioned Whistles cardigans, this may have solved my problem!

lindyloo57 · 08/06/2025 09:08

I think it must be the style of the ones I have that are maybe outdated, they are thin round neck styles, I did buy in john lewis sale a grey thick knit short sleeved with collar and chunky buttons cardigan, which I do like, maybe that's the style I should be looking for

I think linen shirts and cardigans are both useful. I really don’t see how linen shirts would be seen as a cliche, but cutesy cardigans wouldn’t.

Complete madness. Agree ditch waterfall cardigans but the idea that a sweatshirt could be better than a cardigan from the likes of Palava, &Daughter or Brora doesn't bear thinking about.

I love smart clothes but it does depend on where people live and their lifestyle. I live in a very rural area of Somerset so my practical daily outfit is going to be jeans, sweatshirt and walking boots. I only really wear something smarter if I'm going to town or visiting people outside of the area.

Oh no! A good cardi is the stuff of life.
winter here and am in front of roaring fire in nightie and oversized cashmere cardi.. glass wine… bliss!

I still have a couple but they are all short / waist length only and fitted. If what I'm wearing underneath is too bulky I put on a jumper, a blazer or my jeans jacket.

I had mine over ten years, hardly worn so still in great condition, I think maybe the style is out of date, although they are mainly short ones just below the waist, I've been looking online the one I like the look of, is from hush cream/beige with no buttons but it's very expensive more than I would like to pay.

Look on vinted. Sell your not wanted ones on there too if you ask a few pounds it might make the one you actually want more affordable.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 08/06/2025 21:40

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle well, each to their own I guess. They’re not really a cliche but if that’s your opinion, you’re entitled to it.

this Is exactly the type of cardi I’m looking for. V neck, chunky buttons, wide band at waist. Anyone seen any? I’d love one in navy and one in rose brown.

I don't know what's currently available but my most worn cardigans with chunky buttons and v neck are from Mango, but be careful as a lot of their knitwear is acrylic so always check the label. Maybe go on ASOS or similar and do a search, to give you an idea of what's about.

I ike a cardigan but I also love a shawl / wrap and have loads.
