... why do people get them done if they destroy your nails? Or is that a myth? Does it just that it does for some? Or is the longevity worth it?

I had them done once and they made my nails go thin and bendy. Admittedly I did pick them off, but I am not the sort of person who would ever be able to leave gel nails be.

Picking them off made them go ‘thin and bendy’, not the gel itself. You took layers of your own nail off when you pulled the gel off.

I do get mine done every 3 weeks. When they are professionally removed they are fine underneath. Apart from the ones after a hot, sunny, swimming, sun cream holiday, which I think damaged the gels and nails underneath.

Professionally. Gel needs to be wrapped and soaked in acetone to break it down. If you have to ask, you shouldn’t be doing your own gels/removing your own.

Edited

Sorry for not being an expert 😁. Not my area.

ETA and you’re right, I did decide I shouldn’t be getting my nails done after that. Too much maintenance/time/expense to just have different coloured nails.

OmnishambleMum · 07/06/2025 09:44

I love how they look (just gel polish not extensions though) but they’re too expensive to have done regularly and i object to having to pay an exorbitant amount to get them removed when all they do is file them off.
I did get them regularly for a while because I felt so much more groomed but then I got green nail infection which the nail tech told me was nothing to worry about out and redid the gel. The next time I had a huge green patch on the nail which I had to let grow out. Put me right off and not done it since.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 07/06/2025 11:04

That nail tech didn't want to lose the money from your booking instead of prioritising her client's health.

Yeah, maybe. Either way I’ll not be doing that again.

I use the Mylee gel nail kit at home and never had any issues with my nails. As a side note Sally Henson ruined my nails by making them weak and brittle 😪

mondaytosunday · 07/06/2025 15:33

They’ve never harmed mine. I only get my toes done. If I gut regular polish it wouldn’t last more than a couple days. Gel lasts ages.

Thefsm · 07/06/2025 18:29

I hate getting my nails done but I’ve started going once a fortnight and getting gel French manicure. I love the glossy feel and actually having nails - I used to bite mine. The drill them off which does damage the nails a. It but if you plan to keep doing applications then it’s fine. After three visits I didn’t have to get extensions and now have healthier nails than in my whole life.

How much does it cost every 3 weeks?

There’s a ‘show me your nails’ thread on here which really shows how awful gel nails can be.

shivbo2014 · 07/06/2025 20:54

Ive used gel nail wraps for a couple of years and my nails in the best condition they've ever been. After years of biting and picking i finally have long strong nails.

30 , I go to a girl who does them from her own home , ( she is a qualified beautician) Salons are more expensive prob 40 ..
I live in Ireland ….

EvilDJ · 07/06/2025 20:58

I’ve had mine done many times at reputable salons removed properly at the salon and it’s never not made my nails thin and brittle.

So glad it’s not just me!

I had gel nails for 20 years. I kept them short and squoval, usually red in summer and navy blue in winter. I stopped and they grew out during Covid. I keep meaning to start again, I really miss my glossy nails.

ClaireEclair · 07/06/2025 23:06

i had them done once and loved them! Then I had them removed and my nails took months to recover. Never again. And I went to a salon that was supposed to be high end.
