DeMellier New York Bag

Does anyone have the DeMellier New York bag? Any thoughts? Colours? I’m looking into buying it as a treat to myself for my 40th, and wanted opinions on whether it’s a decent mum/busy life bag as well as being stylish. Looking for any review good or bad.

I've literally just received it in the deep tan suede in the midi (smaller) size. I haven't used it much yet, but it appears well constructed and sturdy. I have other Demellier bags and they are holding up well.

It's not too big but will fit a lot in - I doubt it will look right with the cross body strap though.

I am pleased I got it - subscribe to the newsletter and you will get a discount code. There is also a sale on now (I think - I got pre-access but I think its live now) and it has the grey snake if you like that colourway.

Have you also checked out the Polene Cyme - similar type of bag, can be worn different ways and comes in the two sizes too. I also really like that one (which I also have in the black cherry).

I'd personally go for a brown/tan or the black though. The black croc one looks nice too.

Too stiff and garden bucket shaped for me

sweetlimones · 05/06/2025 16:10

This is all really helpful, thank you so much.
I did look at the Polene Cyme but I much prefer the shape of the DeMellier.
The mocha suede is the one I have my eye on.
I agree, it does look stiff, but it’s unlike any of my other bags in that way so I think I will enjoy the structure.
Thanks for the discount tip!

I don’t have the NY, but have the Hudson large in Tan. The construction and quality is really great, I’d recommend the brand in general.

I love the New York Midi and should have bought it 3 years ago when it was much cheaper and in the colour I wanted.
I am an idiot. 🥲

sweetlimones · 05/06/2025 16:53

It’s great to know that the quality of the brand is well worth it.

I liked the look of the mocha suede but the darker colour was too close to my cyme.

i wouldn’t say the bag is too stiff - i do have the suede version and I think it will wear in a bit with age.

i really like mine - go for it.

I got the Midi Paris in tan smooth and for once I sent it back. Just was not right or worth the money. I do have the Montreal Nano too, but it much too small, wish I’d sent that back too.

I have the large one. I don't love it and have barely used it. It's a nice bag but a bad purchase for what I wanted which was a work bag.

Despite the large interior it's too shallow for a laptop, I can just about make it work but not ideal. The interior could do with some sections because small things are just lost in there. I did buy a bag insert but due to the unusual bag shape it's not quite right and is a bit stuffed in.

The pointy sides which are aesthetically pleasing I find a bit awkward sometimes and I wish you could fold them in if needed.

The midi one as a casual bag might work a lot better but for what I wanted it was an expensive fail.

I have the mini New Yorker and it’s my favourite bag. The structure is eye catching. I have the midi in suede and it fits so much in and I think the quality is amazing. The nano Montreal I don’t like. Plain and never thought to measure the size as it doesn’t fit my iPhone pro max size

TotallyFloored · 06/06/2025 07:28

That’s a good point actually - the slightly unusual shape could be a bit more limiting if you needed it for work stuff but I personally think it’s fine for a chuck it all in and go type of bag. I use little make up bag type things to organise, but I know they someone makes an inset specifically for the New York (maybe handbag angels) but it was quite expensive.

I know what people mean about some of the more structured styles. They can be limited in what will fit so it depends what you want them for. I love my Vancouver style wise but it doesn’t fit loads, even compared to other box bags I have. I think with those you maybe need a look and try, rather than relying on the website. Although I have also looks at YouTube videos of “what’s in my bag” although they can often look bigger as they usually have someone tiny holding the bag so the perspective is off if you know what I mean.

sweetlimones · 06/06/2025 09:08

This is all so helpful, thank you.
I think the main thing I’m holding back about is the size. I am a fan of a big bag but I am quite petite, so I’m concerned that it will be the bag carrying me rather than me carrying the bag, if you know what I mean!
I love the unusual shape though.
It’s hard because DeMellier doesn’t have a store, but I found out they stock in Selfridges so next time I’m in London, I think I’ll pop along for a look.

The thing I've found with demellier is that they always are smaller than I think they are going to be, and I think it is because the use skinny little models in the advertising and I'm obviously bigger. They also use perspective in a lot of shots, so the bag is close to the camera with the model in the background, so again making it look bigger.
I don't think the midi size would swamp a small person though. I'm 5ft 5 and roughly a size 14/16 and it certainly isn't huge/massively oversized.
