Colour eyeliner - how to wear?

I am 46 with hooded eye, never bothered with eyeliner as my is hidden and only just discovered tight-lining upper lash line. I bought Clinique Black Honey gel liner and love it. It works like a black liner but just a touch softer and complements my green eyes. It does not inject a distinct colour into my look, so I keep wearing my usual make up.

I would love to try colour eyeliner in the same way along the inner lashline - purple, teal. But not sure how to pair with eyeshadow which I need to create a lid illusion and lipstick, not to look cartoonish / like a child.

How do you wear yours?

Applying eyeliner to the inner lash line, or waterline, is generally not recommended due to potential eye health issues. This practice can lead to dry eye conditions, meibomian gland dysfunction, and even infections. Instead of using eyeliner on the inner lash line, focus on applying it to the outer lash line to create a more defined and natural look.

Reasons to avoid inner lash line eyeliner:

  • Meibomian gland dysfunction:
  • Eyeliner can clog the openings of the meibomian glands, which produce oil that helps lubricate the eyes and prevent dry eye.
  • Dry eye:
  • Obstructing the meibomian glands can lead to dry eye symptoms and discomfort.
  • Infections:
  • Eyeliner can carry bacteria and contaminants that can cause infections, especially if you wear contact lenses or have sensitive eyes.
  • Irritation:
  • Some eyeliner ingredients can irritate the eyes when applied too close to the waterline.
  • Cosmetic issues:
  • Eyeliner on the inner lash line can sometimes make the eyes appear smaller.

^^^ all of this.

Ok, let’s agree that I put it above the lashline…

I use purple and burgundy in my lash line. I have green eyes and it makes them pop a bit. What colour eyes do you have? Go for a corresponding colour.

I have green eyes. My current eyeliner is burgundy black, and would like a violet purple. What eyeshadow do you wear with it (if any) and colour on he lips?

I wear Fresco by Laura Mercier every day. (Greatest eye shadow of all time IMO). The shadow colour isn’t that relevant though because you don’t actually ‘read’ the colour of the liner IYKWIM.

I am pretty clueless when it comes to makeup but I find the Satin Kajal eyeliners by Victoria Beckham really easy to use. They smudge easily, so you can apply them as an eyeliner to the upper lash line then sort of smudge it up so it is a bit like eye shadow. There are videos on the website which will explain better than me. Good range of colours.

I have blue eyes and have always worn black but as I age hear four may help…. When wfh I use Avons Glimmersticks as cheaper than my usual brand and I keep on looking at the lovely colours but bottle it. I think navy or dark green.

I go for a softer pink on the lips if I wear purple eyeliner, a my lips but better type of shade. I have green eyes and love a coloured eyeliner.

I had Avon one - the colour was lovely but it felt slippy and smudgy, no comparison to Clinique. But it’s a good way to try colours cheaply, this has confirmed to me that I do want a purple liner but happy to spend to get a good one. NYX is also cheap and seems to last on the eye but mixed reviews on sharpening plastic. Clinique amethyst is too dark..

Try Maybelline Tattoo eyeliners - they stay put all day and have fantastic colour. The colours stay strong throughout the day. So much better than the overhyped Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliners I have tried in the past.

I have dark brown eyes and find the blues and greens in the range really make my eyes pop. It's also fun to experiment with the placement. Due to my eye shape, I usually put it half way (on top/below or a combination of both) and then draw outwards.

Also fun to use one colour on top lid and a different colour below eye. Can be subtle/strong depending on mood.

Have fun! Loving coloured eyeliners at the moment and the makeup has improved so much over the years. They really stay in place now.

I have brown eyes, I used to wear a metallic gold eyeliner from my inner corner to the pupil, and then blend it into a metallic olive-green from the pupil to the outer corner.
sadly my eyes are so sensitive these days I struggle with any eye makeup
