To continue to grow out hair colour or strip

I'm 5 months into growing out my hair colour and it is looking awful! I've just had 12 inches cut off to shoulder length to try and make the progress easier but it hasn't helped. Should I persevere or go down the stripping root? I have very dark brown hair and I want to go a very light ash which I'm not even sure I will get from stripping, especially as I've had my hair dyed red as well.

When I had mine stripped it came out orange

@suki1964 yeah I know it will come out orange but it depends if I can put dye on top to get the colour I want. Not sure if you can go ash from that!

It will take a few goes.

My hairdresser won't go direct dark to light, she does it over three or four appointments to get to the final colour

I used to use a box dye but over time the ends got very dark, i had dark brown hair but underneath was all grey. Finally realised that it was making me look a mess so sought help at a salon. The fabulous woman there spent 3 hours taking thin slices of hair into foils and leaving some as it was, she then coloured my roots a slightly lighter shade that the rest of my hair then did a caramel toner all over, i now have caramel coloured hair with lighter highlights which is a massive improvement and she suggested that over time i can go lighter to blend in the grey more if i want to. So basically what i suggest is get thee to a salon and let them work their magic.
