Disappointed with my highlights what can I do?

I had hairline highlights done today with a toner. I asked for an ashy brown. I thought it would help blend my grey hair in a bit. But I'm really disappointed. I didn't see the colour properly until I was in daylight and it's not at all subtle. What can I do. Will a blue shampoo help? I had toner at the salon.
Here is a before and after photo

That looks coppery to me, rather than ashy.
Can you return to the hairdressers?

If you’re disappointed, definitely give them a call . Any good hairdresser would be more than happy to correct . I’d say it has more red tones than ashy . Did you show them an inspiration pic? They don’t seem to have coloured the roots either . Mine always puts foils in the puts a colour on the root area to develop at the same time . Which bit are you not happy with ? Xx

It’s very hard to lift such dark hair so they should have managed your expectations but it’s not giving salon fresh either way.

The first option should be to speak to the salon.

Thank you. I'll go back in tomorrow. I think it's the copperyness I don't like. She said it wouldn't go blond. Which is fine I knew that. I wanted it more an ashy brown lighter than my natural hair but not copper.

Ha! One of the best known salons in my city corrected my hair, but made me pay for it anyway because I had agreed to the original colour.

Hairdresser of 30 years here…. First thing, I’m wondering if you had a strand test / allergy test prior to your colouring appointment? This is a really important and necessary step before applying chemicals onto scalp and hair. … especially previously coloured hair, because old hair tint can affect the results of any lifting process. Your original photo shows your hair very dark brown ( base of a 4/5?) if bleach or highlighting tint were applied on your hair, it would not get light enough for and toner to work properly and you’ll be left with a mid colour such as a coppery brown tone ( similar to what you’re looking like currently)
A consultation and some decisions on how to achieve your desired result should have also been discussed ( I hope they did!)
I suggest that you go back asap to the salon and ask to get some professional advice about what they can do to rectify. It’s in their interest to put right any mistakes if they want to maintain good reviews and business.

Hairdresser here, if you wanted it ash brown they should have lightened then a light brown ash toner. Your roots don’t look done either my love? Give them a call and just explain. If anybody contacts me I’m more than happy to sort for them.

Cocomelonhauntsme · 22/05/2025 19:00

Totally agree it's not ashy brown and very helpful advice from the professional PP (I'll be coming to Mumsnet for hairdressing advice in future). Just wanted to say though the warm colour is very pretty on you.

Still go and get what you paid for.

motheroreily · 22/05/2025 19:28

Thank you. This is really helpful
This is a picture from the top in different light. It looks less coppery but kind of like their are more highlights on one side compared to the other and not subtle
They did do a strand test before and said it won't be blonde but I'm just not loving it 🤷

I went back and the hairdresser did another toner. The colour is better but still not what i wanted. It's fine for now though. Thank you for all your advice.

If you’re still not happy the 2nd time, I’d be finding a new hairdresser for the future.
