Ring resizing - better to buy too big or too small?

I am wanting to buy a ring which unfortunately is out of stock in my size M, but is available in L & N.

Am I better buying N and making it smaller or L & making it bigger?

It’s an online purchase with no physical stores so cant try on. Believe it or not Ive never owned a ring before so coming into this clueless!

Its ‘9K white gold’ if that makes a difference!

Buy slightly bigger as in hot weather your hand swells

If you’re getting it resized, it’s easier to go from big to small.

Sizing only works if there aren’t stones throughout, ie, an eternity band.

I bought a ring. The jeweller took it in the back and brought it out five mins later and he’d made it one size bigger. I imagine they applied heat and stretched it one size.

Is that not easier than somehow making it smaller? How would you even do that.
