I nibble at my nails and they are quite soft( washing up by hand without gloves and looks of gardening). They tear easily. I don’t need long talons - just would like to toughen them up a little.
could I have yours recs for stuff that works please?

I second the OPI stuff as above. But use it as directed twice a day for six days, then once a day. It goes on like water and is not a varnish as such.

HappyAsASandboy · 14/05/2025 11:38

I like Nails Inc NailKale Base Coat.

it goes on smoothly, dries really quickly so two coats is quick, and dries to a natural sheen (not shiny, but sort of “done”).

The Best nail hardener I have ever used is nail magic and I have literally tried them all, Opi, Essie, nails inc.
It’s meant to be for very soft peeling nails and makes them rock hard and strong. It’s hard to find, I buy it from a small local pharmacy.

I bit my nails for 27 years, eventually stopped but they were like tissue paper, washing my hands they would break. This is the only product that has ever helped, even the expensive ones didn't do much. They also have a growth one and a specific hardener one but I honestly find them all brilliant, the strengthening one is what I use.

Gloves for gardening and washing up (try the thin vinyl/latex ones).
Don't put anything like hand cream on.

gaggiagirl · 14/05/2025 18:14

I like the Sally Hansen one.

olivelime · 14/05/2025 18:16

I naturally have very thin nails that break. I get them painted in gel polish every 3/4 weeks at a nail salon and they use BIAB, or builder gel as the base. Makes them as hard as nails and they never break anymore.

Have taken collagen for ages- no change to the nails sadly!

OPI Nail Repair Mode caused my nails to lift from the nail bed at the tips. I hadn't made the connection until I read reviews from other people who had the same problems. Glad to hear it works for some people but I have stopped using it and am just hoping my nails return to normal in time.

Anon3837 · 16/05/2025 00:34

Marine Collagen capsules really strengthened my nails!

AllLopsided · 16/05/2025 01:35

I've had cautious success for healing my peeling nails with the Manucurist range (French brand but pretty sure it's available in the uk). The normal range, not the semi-permanent. I use the huile verte, SOS base coat, then a layer of Active Smooth and one of a pale colour or Active Shine. I do it over 2-3 nights. I find the three coats is better than two and it lasts at least a week (going in the swimming pool usually finishes it off for me). They also do an overnight mask but you have to put it on nude nails and I feel the varnish offers some protection. After 6 weeks of this I'm getting less breakage. I also take biotin, omega 3 and a multi B vitamin.

TatteredAndTorn · 16/05/2025 04:15

My nails have got much stronger since I started marine collagen. Not noticed any other changes or improvements other than my nails.

BigButtons · 16/05/2025 06:01

I am going for good old Sally Hansen- I am wary of the systems like opi. I once tried a similar one years ago- marvalla(sp?) or something. It did horrible things to my nails.

No, me neither unfortunately, but definitely nails.

@BigButtons , Mavala? Look a the ingredients, then check online if you are curious.

CheshireCat1 · 16/05/2025 09:23

Perfect Formula in the Pink Gel Coat, is my go to, it strengthens, brightens and seals your nail, it looks good too.
