Funeral attire in hot weather

Going to a funeral next week. DD17 wants to wear a strappy (long) black dress with a jacket - strappy isn’t appropriate is it? If the jacket stays on fine but think it’s likely to be hot.

I think for someone that age it’ll be fine.

Croquembouchiere · 11/05/2025 18:50

Agree that it sounds fine for a teenager

Sorry for your loss 💐

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 18:52

Personally I don’t think strappy is right. Sleeveless, yes. Teens don’t wear black either. Just something simple and neutral.

pimplebum · 11/05/2025 18:54

Don’t over think it
your attendance shows you care
she’s 17 so isn’t expected to have funeral attire as part of her wardrobe

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 18:56

No but beach wear isn’t a great look. Simple with short sleeves is better and most teens don’t wear formal funeral wear but don’t look like they are going to a party either. Middle way is possible.

These are from Mango. Yes I’ve included black ones but these would be fine on a hot day.

It might be chilly in the church? So the jacket, cardie or even scarf over strappy dress would be fine. I really don’t think you should worry. She should look clean and tidy and comfortable. If it’s someone close enough for a teenager to attend, Im sure just the fact she’s there is the most important bit. It’s traumatic enough without worrying what to wear. (Unless it’s a v big high profile affair obvs) hope it all goes well op.

GoodVibesHere · 11/05/2025 19:15

She could perhaps wear a black/dark fitted crop t-shirt under the dress,

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 19:39

Or look really fashionable!

I agree with you that strappy isn’t suitable for a funeral. Young women seem to think that every occasion, no matter how serious, is an opportunity to show off. Something dignified is more important than something black, IMO.

Update for any interested: DD wore the strappy dress with jacket which she didn’t remove and looked very smart and elegant. As PP suggested though we needn’t have worried as people were in jeans and all sorts!

Never ever been to a funeral where anyone wore jeans. Why can’t the Brits bother to look moderately smart anymore?
