Is this a wedding guest faux pax?

I've made a Vinted impulse buy for an upcoming wedding after spending hours scrolling and in-person shopping.

The bridesmaids are in navy and the mothers of the bride and groom have been asked to wear navy.

Do you think wearing this dress will be frowned upon because of the colour? Do you think I could add a pop of colour to detract from the "blueness"?

I would try to emphasise the lighter blue/teal colour with bags, shoes, fascinator if wearing one.

CountryQueen · 11/05/2025 18:48

There will be loads of people in blue and it’s not navy anyway. I’d add some yellow or pink

Candleabra · 11/05/2025 18:48

Sorry, given you know the colour theme, I think it is too close. I could imagine one of the mums wearing a similar dress.

Star81 · 11/05/2025 18:48

When you know most of the wedding party are in blue then I’d stay well away from that colour I’m afraid

BerniesAuntie · 11/05/2025 18:51

I think if you know navy is wedding party theme colour then it’s too close. Shoes, bag and hat won’t change that.

Screamingabdabz · 11/05/2025 18:52

It’s a lovely dress. I think just wear it and hide at the back until everyone’s had a drink and by then it won’t matter!

Redburnett · 11/05/2025 18:55

That is a dressing gown not a dress!

suburberphobe · 11/05/2025 19:04

I agree @Redburnett.

I have one exactly like that.

SarahAndQuack · 11/05/2025 19:17

I doubt anyone will think twice about it.

Mumofoneandone · 11/05/2025 19:38

Lovely dress - add some splash of colour to it ie pink accessories/wrap and go for it. It's also not solid navy, but broken up......
I wear a lot of navy, so sympathise.

burnyburnyname · 11/05/2025 21:53

Mixed opinions. I'll wait and see what it's like on.

If you’re happy with the dress when you try it on, pink or orange accessories would be great with it.

minipie · 11/05/2025 22:24

That is not navy or even close IMO

Those are the 2 colours I was thinking of.

Weddings have become this weird minefield. Why on earth should the “wedding party” have ownership of an entire colour ? It’s bizarre. I’ve never been to a wedding where I knew what colour the bridesmaids’ dresses would be, or where anyone would have cared if there were guests also in that colour.

I completely agree with you. Unfortunately not everyone thinks that way.

I've never been to a wedding where I knew what colour the bridesmaids were wearing. Nor one when the mothers of the couple were asked to wear the same colour as the bridesmaids. That's just plain odd.

There's no reason for you to know what colour the bridesmaids are wearing and no reason for you to factor that knowledge into your choices even if you do know it.
