How on earth do you decide which collagen to buy?

Obviously this only applies to those who actually take it, I know not everyone thinks it does anything but I'm willing to keep going with this a bit longer.

I've been taking Ancient & Brave since the start of the year but not sure it's the one for me. I also can't afford to pay £32 a month for it.

I've looked at Nutrition Geeks, Elevate and Willpowders but I'm a bit bamboozled with all the different claims and any pointers would be much appreciated!

I've decided I'm going to concentrate on buying good local organic chicken and local wild caught fish to make bone broth and use it for stews, chowders and bouillabaisse.

I reckon that will work better than all these powder concoctions. The nutrition geeks one is made from the powdered bone of brazilian cattle - the amazon rainforest has been cut down to create these cattle fields. I'd rather have a withered face than buy that.

Oh really? That's ruled that out for me too then
I think I might just give up and leave it, I think I'm wasting my money to be honest.

Spend your money on locally sourced meat and fish and make your own bone broth instead. At least it's proper food and you get meals out of all the meat too.

I think this collagen powder malarky is the latest con to get women of a certain age to part with their money.

deeahgwitch · 27/12/2025 12:19

I have gone through a tub of marine collagen and a tub of bovine collagen and also biotin and my nails are still sh*t.

Geneticsbunny · 27/12/2025 12:26

@StCuntyMcCunterson that was what I thought but that doesn't take into account the gut microbiome and it's impact on whole body health. So whilst the collagen itself isn't being absorbed, it could still be influencing/improving health in ways that aren't very well understood yet plus it is unlikely to do any harm (except financially).

almondflake · 27/12/2025 12:28

I also use the nutrition geeks one and fell like it made a huge difference to my hair and nails so I like to stick to that one . I will try others if they are a gift for example but I would definitely buy nutrition geeks if I’m choosing .

@DancingDucks So I take collagen and researched quite heavily beforehand. So personally for me, I started with my goals which were joint, hair and skin health. So for that I would need type 1 and 3. Next was that I need to ensure it actually gets absorbed properly so that’s why I chose ‘hydrolysed’. Then I considered the source of the collagen. As joint health is so important to me I chose marine collagen as it is typically rich in that type 1 collagen. Thereafter, to ensure that the stuff actually is ‘real’ and quality as it were, and so not a waste of money, I ensured that it was 3rd party tested and was GMP compliant. I also chose powder form as I believe it’s better for absorption. Hope that helps!

That’s exactly toy what I need. Which one is it please?

Wonderknicks · 27/12/2025 13:16

I've said this on other threads, but you need to think about biology. One of the purpose of the digestive system is to break down proteins such as collagen to amino acid. When your body absorbs them it doesn't know that they have come from collagen & somehow magically build them back into collagen in your joints/hair follicles etc, it just treats them the same as any other amino acid & uses them as building blocks for proteins (including collagen of course).
Save your money & eat proteins as you normally would.

I take the Weightworld one £7:99 on Amazon. I mainly take it for joint pain as I have severe arthritis in my spine but it has helped my skin & nails as a side benefit. Been taking it for over a year & it has made a big difference.

RollyPollyBatFace · 27/12/2025 15:40

It doesn’t work. There’s zero evidence to say it does. All ‘studies’ have been funded by the Brands themselves

It won’t harm you and there’s the whole placebo/ anecdotal effect so worth doing if you want to feel you’re doing ‘something’ for yourself

I personally don’t use anything like that now. I stick to vitamin D, iron supplements (I have a slight deficiency) and I prioritise as much sleep as I can, eating a decent diet (err this is a work in progress) and keeping my weight in the normal range. Oh and a walk every day. I need to add in strength training too

I find the above helps most things and it’s all proven

lindyloo57 · 27/12/2025 11:34

I was watching one or doctors on youtube how saying don't waste your money, it does nothing can't stay in the body it just comes out when you pee, so I won't bother.

Same as for all the water soluble vitamins and yet many of us need extra vitamins. Food is not as rich in them, or minerals, as it was even 40 years ago.

You could just hide the thread you know, same as for all the others who want to just shit on these type of threads.

Thank you. Amazing.

WarriorN · 27/12/2025 16:01

Chat gtp is helpful for this

type 2 has evidence for joint health

im taking that and started type 1 and 3 from will powders for bone and gut health.

no idea if it helps skin

I think there’s actually more evidence for ground flax seed there

Neighull · 27/12/2025 16:01

Was on Nutrition Geeks for 3 months. It did nothing.

muddyford · 27/12/2025 16:03

I'm trying Healthspan marine collagen. One tablet a day. Been taking it for about two months, thought I would review after six months or so.

CrikeyMajikey · 27/12/2025 16:09

I take Kolo Marine Collagen. I didn’t particularly research it, a friend recommended it. I’ve found it great for my joints and mobility.

Juicyapple44 · 27/12/2025 16:15

I have been taking the nutrition geeks one and its reaaly helped my joint pain and hair loss, i did stop thibking it did nothihg, but then the hip pain and hair loss came back with in a week

reallyneedareset · 27/12/2025 16:17

Has collagen had a positive effect on IBS D for anyone?

RollyPollyBatFace · 27/12/2025 16:27

@LittleGreenDragons you don’t want scientific facts then? Just want to hear a load of old nonsense?

Each to their own 🤣

Fizbosshoes · 27/12/2025 16:30

Ive been thinking about collagen and more so since I saw a reel on Instagram on how collegen allegedly does a similar thing as GLP-1 and I was interested in that aspect as well as skin and joint benefits. ( Im not overweight but would love to be half a stone lighter)
...but no idea how valid any of the claims are....
My sleep is also shit, and the nutrition geeks magnesium promised better sleep but I didnt really notice it when I tried it

This.
its just a big marketing gimmick basically. Save your money & spend it on har extensions, gel nails or micro needling. These are the things that will make a noticeable difference.
