If I used to like Kin (John Lewis) …

If I used to like Kin by John Lewis, what brands should I look at.

I always used to buy from there, but they only do the brand for men now.

  • Tall size 20.
  • Good quality fabrics in a heavier weight.
  • Structural/boxy/oversized shapes.
  • Quite a “Japanese pattern book” aesthetic.

Any ideas or recommendations please?

M&S Twill barrel trousers are a fantastic voluminous shape - more so than the appear online.
I also have the pure cotton cropped palazzo crops, they are very similar to some Japanese trousers I own. Very wide and give a really interesting silhouette.
They both look much better in real life than online.

Cos.

lostinthesunshine · 03/05/2025 18:34

Thanks @NorthFaceofthelaundrypile and @Fancytallglass I’ll give those a try 😊

I absolutely love Cos, but they only seem to go up to a 16.

I might need to pop into store to try the M&S recommendations because they are still not taking online orders.

I miss Kin! Their really voluminous items didn’t work on me, but sizing down for closer fit worked a treat.

PeanutButter82 · 03/05/2025 20:13

I’ve bought a couple of Kin things on Vinted for v
good prices!

PeanutButter82 · 03/05/2025 20:17

Also I like the look of Rune Studio but haven’t actually bought anything from there yet.

I used to wear their stuff when I was a size 20+. Check out the stuff in an L or XL. It's very generous. I'm a 12 and a size 8 of theirs fitted me last week (a top). Worth trying perhaps

Laska2Meryls · 04/05/2025 08:39

Have you looked at Oska ? ( Expensive though!)

ithinkicanithinkican · 04/05/2025 09:23

Following this thread as I loved Kin! Have bought some pieces off Vinted this year but do miss being able to buy new items from JL. It was my go-to brand really.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/05/2025 14:23

I think you might be interested in the "dark academia" threads. Have a search.

lindyloo57 · 04/05/2025 16:31

@NorthFaceofthelaundrypile are they the ones from pur una range, I did see them in store last week. The cropped plazzos I mean.

bumsntums · 04/05/2025 18:48

REW clothing might be worth checking. I haven't bought from them, but some interesting looking shapes and fabrics look decent. Q

I loved Kin. I like Cos in theory but it’s so high concept and Kin was much more approachable.

It’s styled differently, but I find that Sahara and Toast have similar stuff. You have to pick through the tweedy academic things (Toast) and the tunics and Prue Leith necklaces (Sahara) but in particular for trousers both are great. Not cheap but lovely quality and lots available second hand. I have several pairs of the Sahara bubble trousers. They do them in lots of different fabrics. I like the ponte ones and the summer type (Cupro?). They style them with drapy linen, I wear them with T-shirts.

I also like Arket. Same sort of middle ground between H&M and Cos that Kin occupied. Not sure what their size range is like but worth a look

cramptramp · 04/05/2025 21:47

I loved kin. I also love cos. Some of their sizes are massive.

Have you tried anything on in Cos? Their T-shirts are true to size but things like dresses and trousers are often very oversized. My usual size is generally falling-off-too-big in Cos. It’s a brand I never try to buy online because the way they suggest their clothes are worn and the way people who need to catch a train and unpack the shopping might wear them are very different.

Boxfreshrussell · 04/05/2025 22:08

I would say Toast but unsure on their sizing. You could always google image search Kin items and see if other brands come up?

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 06/05/2025 18:24

@lindyloo57 - no, M&S collection.
They’re a slightly odd textured fabric, really smooth. But the shape is fantastic, and actually very COS
