Stain removal on cotton dress

Help!

I have this dress, wore it once and have a grease stain on the boob area - really noticeable. I'm usually really clumsy but this one wasn't even my fault! It's been washed with a fabric stain remover pre treat but the stain is still there. Does anyone have any top tips to get rid of it?

You’ve just reminded me to wash a hoody with a grease spot on it

I sprayed vanish, used Persil biological powder and added bicarbonate of soda. Then added distilled white vinegar as the fabric conditioner

I’ll update on results but it’s my go to for stains including grease and tends to work

SheridansPortSalut · 01/05/2025 15:55

Vanish spray always works for me.

An oil based stain needs a basic degreaser

When ds gets food grease on his cotton sweatshirts, I smear the stain with neat washing up liquid, rub it in and leave for an hour before washing as normal.

Nancy Birtwhistle is my stain guru, she says …

Required: Spray bottle, bicarbonate of soda, eco-friendly washing up liquid & repurposed plastic bag.
Method: Wet the stain then mix washing up liquid and bicarbonate of soda. Rub plenty into the stain, pop in an airtight bag overnight so it doesn’t dry out then wash the next day.

For future put washing up liquid on the stain as soon as you can, you can then throw the item in the wash basket after you’ve smeared it on and wash as normal.

Well the grease stain is out of the hoody I washed

washing up liquid is a great idea for stubborn grease stains

be careful not to leave stain removers on for too long because it can lighten the area in turn ruining the whole garment

I got greasy sun cream all over a white top. I covered the stains with fairy liquid and white vinegar, left to soak for a couple of hours and washed as normal. The stains were completely gone 👍

Totally agree with everyone who says washing up liquid- it dissolves the grease. Stain removers often bleach your clothes

Thanks all - I'm off to soak it in washing up liquid now!!

Add some bicarb to it to make a paste, rub in and leave for at least half an hour.

Wet the stain and rub liquid handsoap into the stain, rub it in well. Turn top inside out and rub more soap on the inside where the stain is. Rub well for a few minutes and then wash as normal. It has saved many a top for me.

All this soaking in washing up liquid and scrubbing might get the stain out but will not do much for the longevity of the dress. For a grease stain, before you wash it just rub in talcum powder on both sides of the fabric on the stain and let it sit overnight or for some hours at least. Shake out the garment and then wash normally. Talcum powder soaks up the grease and it washes away. Occasionally I have had to repeat but it works very well and it is much gentler than most of the advice on this thread.

Fairy liquid neat on the stain and some hottish water. Rub/ blot the stain. Leave stain to break down for 5 or so minutes. Wash at 40. Always works for me.
