Can home (box) hair dye every be as good as salon colour?

Finding it hard to justify the amount I’m spending over the year on salon colouring to cover greys!

Can anyone recommend a brilliant box dye that doesn’t make dark frizzy brown hair turn black and muddy looking please?

I use this https://www.gentlehairdye.com/colour/water-colour-gel
it is a powder you mix with water. Very easy to apply. My hair is at least 50% grey without it. Looks very natural and I usually apply every six weeks. I have a short bob so go to my hairdresser every 8 weeks. She is always impressed with my colour.

I use esalon semi permanent dye, in a customised colour. I found other box dyes come up darker and more red- toned than described, but this brand exactly replicates my original medium brown colour with gold tones.

I dye my own roots (esalon or a box dye).

If I do goto the salon to get it done (which is rare) I get one of the juniors to do it rather than my very expensive usual stylists (who I get to cut it afterwards).

I died my hair for years before the greys got too many. I used L’Oréal Casting and always massaged into the roots, then only combed through the length of my hair for the last few mins. This gave the most natural effect.
