Conference clothes and recommendations for tailored trousers

Hi All,

I’ve just posted on the work chat regarding a nerve wracking conference I’m about to attend for work where a woman who bullied me last year will be there and I was recommended to post here.

It’s a STEM event so a mixture of people turning up wearing socks and sandals and others dressing more corporately.

I want to feel confident, corporate but comfortable (and not too over dressed but still stylish). Has anyone seen or bought an outfit recently they would recommend? Or someone on insta they follow who makes good recommendations? I’m 5 6”’and a size 8/10.

I'm also looking for flattering high waist tailored trousers (widish leg). Does anyone have recommendations? (I have 33” legs so struggle about with them looking too short).

I buy a lot of Boden. Their Westbourne trousers in ponte(?) are lovely and comfortable. They also match the Marylebone blazers ( I have both in lots of colours!)

Studio Nicholson is the first place that springs to mind - epitomises contemporary professional dressing:

Link is to tailoring and sets but take a look at everything.

Cos is the more affordable alternative. Again, the link is to tailoring but it’s all good:

I got some tailored wide leg trousers from River Island. Long says it’s 34”. I got away with the regular as I wanted them for flats.

Hi a tall friend of mine gets her trousers from Lan's End catalogue as they can sort out the hem length for people. I hope yu feel splendid at the event and just ignore the woman who bullied you. I hope it goes well for you. I am retired now but used to get lovely tops from M&S myself. There are a lot more places online now but I liked trying things on so used to go to M&S for that reason.

I quite like the shape of Gerard darel trousers this season but their prices seem to have risen a lot.

I sympathise. I have a work conference coming up at the end of next month, I've worked from home for 10 years and most of my clothing is at the 'walking the dog' end of the smart spectrum so I'm currently in the 'shit i've no idea what to wear' stage.

It's tech so really anything goes, but I still get tied up in knots about it. I've just ordered a couple of bits from Boden and some 'smart trainers'. My main concern is being warm enough as they always seem to have the AC turned up to the max in these places, outfits that require sandals are a no go as i want to wear socks!

Also have a look at Massimo Dutti - they do a range of trouser styles. I'm 5'7 and their trousers are longish for me at a size up from you. I also think cos often have trousers in great materials and with a great fit.

Most of my work trousers are Jigsaw, they do look smart without being too boring IMO. I normally have to shorten 2/3 inches for 30" leg so they should hit you about right.

All the stuff I ordered from boden is massive so it's all going back.

Teacakeorbap · 30/04/2025 19:32

@Ergadzooks I’m a size8/10 in trousers but always order a size 6 from Boden!
