Help me get out of my jeans!

Hello,

Need some ideas please! Just turned 40, size 16ish (pear shaped but also have a bit of a lower belly!). I usually live and die in jeans but feel in a rut. What other trousers should I be looking at?!

If I don’t wear jeans, I am wearing either smarter wide leg trousers or linen trousers. Also wear midi dresses or long skirts.
i find these flattering on my similarly shaped body !

PrimevalStomp · 26/04/2025 18:48

You can wear any other style of trouser - but going into summer might you consider a dress or skirt?

What sort of budget are you thinking of? And for work or leisure?

soccermum10 · 26/04/2025 20:59

Light floaty wide legged trousers. I also live in maxi skirts during summer

It sounds silly I know, but I so rarely wear skirts or dresses that I feel like that would be a massive change, rather than just widening my trouser options 😂

Sorry also missed, budget wise I'm pretty easy. And more for leisure - I do have smart black work trousers for when I'm in the office, but mostly wfh hence living in jeans

For leisure - something from here?

https://communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-trousers-chinos

Or:

https://www.toa.st/collections/womens-trousers

Or:

https://www.americanvintage-store.com/gb/en/women-trousers/ (Generous sizing, a size 14 equivalent is likely to fit.)

All the above generally do excellent denim skirts as well.

I've had a few eras in the life of how I dress, mostly in my early 30s. I think I was wanting to feel more grown up 😂 . There was the switch to only good undies. Another was stopping wearing trainers. There are lots, but one was a deciding to stop wearing jeans. For me, corduroy was the natural replacement, then linen and cotton. I've since added in some denim trousers, but I wouldn't call them jeans. They're a little fancy for that!

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/04/2025 09:09

Cords are what I tend to wear when I don't wear jeans. I have some really flatterig wide legged navy ones from Uniqlo that are super comfy.

BertieBottsEveryFlavourBeans · 27/04/2025 09:13

I've just bought a couple of pairs of wide leg linen trousers from Tesco, they are so comfy and (in my opinion!) look good.

I have some of tesco wide leg trousers….theyre great!

Oh, a few years ago I bought some slouchy elasticated waist cords in a Uniqlo sale for about thruppence - a size too big because that was all they had. I loved them and very much wanted a smarter version for leaving the house in.

Last Autumn , when Community Clothing brought out cords for men, I wrote to ask them if they’d be making some for women. They replied saying unfortunately they were not planning to do so. Then they did. 🤔😄 They don’t look quite slouchy enough for me, but I’m glad they changed their minds anyway.

I much prefer skirts to trousers - there’s ecstasy to be had in achieving the correct proportions between skirt hem and boot - so had neglected my trouser wardrobe recently. Leading to finding myself the sole person in an entire city wearing ankle length trousers last weekend when everyone else’s trouser hems were breaking on their instep and flirting with the ground. Something must be done …

Blackcordoroys · 27/04/2025 10:36

I just bought these, surprisingly smart. I’ve worn them with a black polo and boots to work and with white hi tops and at shirt this weekend. Machine washable and absolutely don’t need ironing

Have a look at trousers from Rew. Super-comfy and practical but look great! You’ll be a size Medium.

DinoLil · 27/04/2025 10:44

I'm an 18 and wear wide legged trousers from whispers tiktok shop. Elasticated waist and fab patterns. I wear them with a plain fitted tshirt.

s017506 · 27/04/2025 14:32

Thank you all, will take a look at some of those! I've avoided wide legs in the past as felt they didn't suit me, but maybe I need to try some again!

The trick is getting a pair with a well fitted high waist and pairing them with a structured top. Otherwise you can look like an Emo kid from 2002.

hellswelshy · 27/04/2025 17:17

Try the cropped wide pull on trousers from H&M, they're very affordable- £15 ish. I've got pretty much every colour! They are wide but not too wide, just perfect 👌

NestOfWipers · 27/04/2025 17:23

Blackcordoroys · 27/04/2025 10:36

I hope they look nicer on you! On the model (who is probably 6 foot!! Admittedly). They look like they've had an argument with her trainers!!

They don't suit me because I just look like one of those kids toys you push down and wait for it to jump up But I'm only 4 foot 11,

I try to find cropped trousers that are straight legged & if they are properly cropped, they fit me as full length.

They are a great length on me (5-6) 😁
